The Communication Officer answers to the Shift Supervisor and ultimately the Director through the Assistant Director. The Communication Officer is responsible for any duties assigned or delegated by the Shift Supervisor, Assistant Director or the Director.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Receives incoming telephone calls on the 9-1-1 Phone Lines and the Administrative Lines and identifies the proper Public Safety response.

  • Enters all information pertaining to Calls for Service into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) computer system.

  • Monitors assigned talk groups and dispatches the proper Public Safety Response to the Calls for Service.

  • Updates the CAD as to dispatch, arrive and clear of Public Safety Units, and maintains the unit’s current location in the CAD.

  • Works closely with other Communication Officers to ensure the relay of information critical to the Public Safety Response.

  • Receives and properly disseminates GCIC/NCIC information as governed by Georgia Law and GCIC policies and procedures.

  • Fills in as needed for any position (Vacations, Holidays, Sick, Breaks, and Shortage of Personnel).

  • Maintains equipment and inspection of equipment to ensure serviceability.


REQUIREMENTS:


Required minimum qualifications:

Education:
High School diploma or G.E.D.

Experience: Entry level – no experience required.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of:


  • Considerable knowledge of Radio/Telephone procedures and equipment.

  • Proficiency in working within deadlines, interpersonal communication, and report preparation.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks at one time. Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.

  • Considerable knowledge of operations of governmental departments and procedures, governmental and departmental policies, and applicable state and local rules and regulations.

  • Strong understanding of the factors relating to crisis intervention and calming techniques.

  • Skill in the operation of computers.

Skills:


  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral.

  • Strong people skills.

Licensing: Valid Driver’s License Required


Certification:


  • Possess or ability to readily obtain state certification within one year as a Basic Communication Officer as required by OCGA §35-8-23

  • Possess or ability to readily obtain certification within 6 months as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher, NAED

  • Possess or ability to readily obtain certification within 6 months as an Emergency Telecommunicator, NAED

  • Must obtain and maintain Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) certification within six (6) months

  • Must obtain and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification within six (6) months

Other:


  • Successful completion of In-House training program within one (1) year

  • Incumbent is subject to mandatory overtime

  • Incumbent must be able to work all shifts and is subject to changes of shift at any time

Physical Requirements:

Depending upon area of assignment: Positions in this class typically require: walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Work is performed in an office setting.


Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
