This position will report to the Open Space Division. The Open Space Division is responsible for the management of 20 properties consisting of 7,000 acres. Open Space lands are generally preserved and managed in a near natural condition. Such lands might include scenic vistas, wetlands, streams, flood plains, trail corridors, agricultural lands, highly visible natural areas along major streets and open space buffers. Open space land is generally open for passive recreation opportunities such as hiking, bicycling, equestrian trail uses, nature study, environmental education and interpretive programs, wildlife habitat, fishing, photography, or similar compatible uses. The Open Space Division manages one area for the specific use of motorized recreation.
Although not required, a Bachelor’s degree in park management, outdoor recreation, natural resource management, or a closely related field is preferred. In addition, this position will likely work Wednesday – Sunday, ending the 8-hour work shift near sunset.

- Provides information and appropriate assistance concerning department programs (parks or open space) and related facilities to include recommending and implementing trail building, and trail maintenance projects; identify resource problems; assist with developing solutions and implementing projects for resource protection and rehabilitation including noxious weed control; and preparing sites for reserved group activities and events.
- Explains and interprets park and open space ordinances, rules and regulations.
- Assists businesses and non-profit organizations with volunteer projects. Speaks with schools, community groups and other visitors on park and open space programs.
- Patrols parks, open space and other jurisdictional facilities for the purpose of controlling crime, preventing and detecting violations of laws, and assisting in making arrests.
- Performs investigative duties regarding complaints and incidents in parks and open space properties.
- Assists other law enforcement agencies when necessary.
- Provides crowd and traffic control coverage at special events and assigned recreation activities.
- Collects trash and other debris; cleans and maintains buildings, grounds, and restrooms; and prevents or abates graffiti. Reports maintenance issues as required.
- Assists and provides appropriate first aid.
- Writes detailed reports on all accidents, and other necessary reports.
- Responds to emergencies at parks and open space locations.
- Drives a City motor vehicle, bicycle, or ATV to travel to or patrol parks and open space locations; and respond to emergency situations.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit’s service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
- Prepares reports, correspondence and a variety of written materials; prepares and maintains accurate records, collects visitor data, and documents parks and open space activities.
- Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work.
- Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and City staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
- May train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned seasonal personnel.

Education and Experience:
Equivalent to a High School education or GED; AND two (2) years of experience in customer service, parks operations or law enforcement; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources. A Bachelor’s degree in park management, outdoor recreation, natural resources management, or a closely related field is preferred.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Under General Supervision – Incumbents at this level are given assignments and objectives that are governed by specifically outlined work methods and a sequence of steps, which are explained in general terms. The responsibility for achieving the work objectives, however, rests with a superior. Immediate supervision is not consistent, but checks are integrated into work processes and/or reviews are frequent enough to ensure compliance with instructions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. All new employees will serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months. Such employees are not subject to the collective bargaining agreement and may be laid off or discharged during this period for any reason.

Any City employee may be required to stay at or return to work during emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency.
4. Employees may be required to complete Incident Command System training as a condition of continuing employment.
5. New employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation which cost the new employee $54.25 and a drug/alcohol screen which costs $20.00. Employment is contingent upon passing the background and the drug/alcohol screen.
