The USAID Education in Conflict and Crisis Network (IDD) has an opening for a part time (50%) Senior Researcher, reporting to the Cornelia Janke, Project Director, in Waltham, MA or Washington DC offices.


POSITION SUMMARY


EDC seeks, for immediate employment, a Senior Reseacher to be an intregal part of the USAID-funded Education in Conflict and Crisis Network (USAID ECCN). This position is funded by USAID under the Building Evidence and Capacity to Increase Equitable Access to Education in Crisis and Conflict-Affected Environments contract. USAID ECCN is a community of practice composed of USAID education staff, implementing partners and others working to increase equitable access to, and improve the quality of, education in crisis and conflict affected environments. This five year initiative was established to promote knowledge generation and sharing among practitioners, policy makers and researchers related to Goal 3 of the USAID Education Strategy: improved equitable access to education in crisis and conflict affected environments.


The Senior Researcher will apply experience in the area of research, synthesis and knowledge management related to increasing equitable access to education in conflict and crisis, explore related issues and document ‘what works’ effectively and cost-efficiently in pilots and at scale. Working with other members of the USAID ECCN team, the person in this position developes or directs the development of innovative and creative technical solutions to research problems, questions, and issues, using or extending state-of-the-art methods. This position will also support capacity building with community groups, education authorities, teachers, supervisors, and quality assurance officers for investigative and applied research activities to ensure results.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


The person in this position is expected to communicate clearly and courteously; to develop and maintain positive relationships with USAID staff, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, field sites, and other fundering partners; and to work respectfully with EDC colleagues. The job requires adherence to EDC policies & procedures.


Senior Researcher


• Further augments the organization’s intellectual capital, while developing greater recognition as a leader in the field of research in education in conflict and crisis contexts


• Is responsible for initiation and execution of research projects for USAID ECCN


• Exercises leadership and expertise in qualitative & quantitative methods for research design and instrumentation


• Oversees data collection & validation processes, ensuring quality & reliability


• Reviews documentation


• Synthesizes concepts and recommendations


• Writes,edits, & plans complex materials


• Develops high-visibility presentations


• Contributes to conferences and peer-reviewed publications


• Develops original bodies of work


• Investigates solutions to potential problems, which may result in products, programs, services or inventions


The Senior Researcher also


• Advises on complex USAID ECCN training or design projects


• Designs or conducts conferences or workshops for USAID staff, education authories, teachers &/or supervisors in Goal 3 countries


•Expands contacts and strengthens client relations; develops business and professional relationships by communicating technical information to professional or civic communities, government agencies, “stakeholders” or institutions


• Works with senior management and project staff on new concepts and on bringing new products &/or programs to market


• Guides feedback exchanges; provides expertise to others


• Oversees administrative and logistical coordination of research projects


• Troubleshoots complex problems and develops solutions


• May provide administrative supervision, technical direction, or project management to research consultants


• May travel to countries with complex security issues


QUALIFICATIONS


This position requires educational achievement; excellent writing skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and strong interpersonal & organizational skills. Specific requirements:


• Minimum of 10 years’ experience in education research, involving a range of research activities and products


• Minimum of 5 years’ experience conducting research on education in developing countries


•Master’s degree in related field required; Ph.D preferred


• Qualitative and quantitative experience required, in reading or a closely related technical area


• Wide range of prublication and conference presentations.


• Proven ability to conduct large-scale research projects in developing contexts


• Candidates speaking French, Spanish, or Arabic in addition to English preferred
