Wastewater Plant Operators assist in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant and its 7 related remote sites. Easterly is a 15 MGD (million gallon per day) activated sludge plant with tertiary treatment. The plant is currently under construction and will be a Class V Tertiary Treatment Plant in May 2015. Easterly is a 24-hour facility and all Wastewater Plant Operators are required to work shift work.
The current vacancy, as well as future vacancies, may be filled at any of the three levels depending on the need of the department. The Wastewater Plant Operator I is the advanced trainee-level classification and requires a Grade I certificate. The Wastewater Plant Operator II is the journey-level classification and requires a Grade II certificate. The Wastewater Plant Operator III is the advanced journey-level classification and requires a Grade III certificate (and a Class B driver’s license, within 12 months of appointment). Wastewater Plant Operator I/II/III is considered a flexibly staffed position, which means that employees may be eligible to promote to the next higher level upon obtaining the appropriate certification and experience.
Salaries (by level):
WWPO I $4,669 – $5,675/month
WWPO II $5,028 – $6,111/month
WWPO III $5,505 – $6,570/month

Minimum Qualifications:
Wastewater Plant Operator I: One (1) year of experience in work involving operation of a wastewater treatment plant and possession of a Grade I certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board
Wastewater Plant Operator II: One (1) year of experience performing the functions of a wastewater treatment plant operator and possession of a Grade II certificate (or higher) issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board.
Wastewater Plant Operator III: Two (2) years of experience performing the functions of a wastewater treatment plant operator andMust possess a California Class B driver’s license within 12 months of appointment to position. Must possess licensing adequate to maintain compliance with all State and Federal requirements for hazardous materials handling and transport, within 12 months of appointment to position. Department of Motor Vehicles age restrictions may apply. This is a safety-sensitive position and will be subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements for drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, reasonable suspicion and random testing).
Continued maintenance of these valid certificates, plus any other State mandated certification, is a condition of continued employment (all levels).
Physical and Sensory Requirements:
Performs tasks requiring: strength and stamina, such as lifting and moving pumps and other equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, pulling hoses; shoveling for up to one hour; bending, stretching, reaching, twisting, kneeling, squatting, and ascending and descending stairs and ladders; exposure to chemicals, skin irritants, fumes, and solvents; repetitive hand and arm motion; ability to see well enough to read gauges, documents and computer screens; ability to distinguish colors; ability to communicate verbally, including projecting a voice that can be heard in a noisy environment; ability to hear and distinguish various sounds, such as alarms, voices of co-workers and sounds of operating equipment in both quiet and noisy environments; ability to work both inside and outside with exposure to weather, odors, dust and pollen; hand and finger dexterity sufficient to use small tools; walking and standing for extended periods of time; and driving heavy equipment, off-road, for long periods
Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for job assignments. Must comply with Utilities Department safety and respiratory programs and Cal OSHA standards.
Other Requirements: Must be willing to work any day and shift within a 24-hour period.
