We are currently working in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council Services (HCC) to offer a range of support and services including facilities Management, ITC Support and Adult Services and have recently taken on Children Services. Over the past two years HCC have made some significant changes and improvements to Children’s Services, having refocused services and invested in targeted intervention.


Serco is currently recruiting for a Business Support Officer based at Beechwood Family Centre, Watford in partnership with Herfordshire County Council. The position is offered on a full time (37 hours), permanent contract working Monday to Thursday 9am – 5.30pm and Friday 9am – 4.30pm.


The Business Support Officer will provide business and administrative support to individuals and teams who provide supervised contact with children and young people in the care of Herts CC with their parents, family and guardians. The role also involves being the first point of contact for children and young people arriving at contact centre and to help ensure children and young people are respectfully dealt with and have a safe environment for any contacts.


Principal Duties


  • Meeting and greeting children, young people and their families attending a centre for contact.

  • Ensuring that all visitors are well looked after, providing them with clear information to facilitate contacts.

  • Update and manage computer databases and spreadsheets, provide reports and assist in compiling information such as statutory returns, manage and track expenditure.

  • Utilise software packages such as Microsoft Office, and preparation of letters and documentation.

  • Provide professional support to Senior Contact Workers and Team Manager dealing with confidential and sensitive matters, answer telephone calls and provide information as a first point of contact.

  • Undertake a range of administrative duties such as note and minute taking, filing, faxing, scanning and photocopying and deal with all general matters including cash handling, correspondence, invoices and timesheets.

  • Manage team commitments avoiding scheduling conflicts and arrange meetings and training courses, venues, agendas.

  • The duties and responsibilities listed above describe the post as it is at present. The post holder is expected to accept any reasonable alterations that may from time to time be necessary.

Key Skills and Experience


Although there are no specific qualifications required for this role previous experience in service delivery or a business related qualification would be beneficial. You will be a competent administrator with experience of working directly with the public and who is confident to be the first point of contact for managers and possess excellent customer care skills.


This post is classed as having a high degree of contact with children or vulnerable


adults and is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. An enhanced


disclosure will be sought through the Criminal Records Bureau as part of


Serco’s pre-employment checks.
