These positions will provide visitor and resource protection duties for Glacier National Park. Rangers are responsible for independently performing law enforcement duties that include detection, investigation, apprehension, detention, and prosecution of violators under provisions of applicable federal and state laws, rules, and regulations enacted to insure the protection and safe use of national park resources. Other major duties include wildland and structure fire participation up to the level of certification that the applicant holds, emergency medical services up to the level of certification the applicant holds, search and rescue in both winter and summer environments, visitor education, and some wildlife management related activities such as bear management. Work is accomplished through front and back country patrols of park lands primarily by foot, vehicle, boat, and may also include patrols by horseback, ski, and snowmobile. Incumbent works closely with other park operations, assisting agencies, and cooperating associations as well as the park concession operations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
These are physically arduous positions. Duties involve field work requiring strenuous physical performance, endurance, and superior physical condition. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds. Visitor safety and park protection activities continue during the winter as patrol and emergency operations are conducted in often extreme winter environments with temperatures often below zero, deep snow and avalanche dangers. This includes road patrol, snowmobile operations, extended back-country ski patrols, search and rescue in snow and ice rescue. Incumbent must meet all physical requirements and pass applicable screening to obtain and maintain a Law Enforcement Commission.
Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an arduous level wildland firefighting Red Card (Wildland Firefighter Type 2), which includes passing the arduous-duty pack test. Candidates will also be required to obtain and maintain structural fire certification.
The duties of these positions require arduous physical exertion involving walking, running, lifting, standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. The Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) is a fitness test consisting of five different components: 1) agility run – measures the ability to get up from the ground and sprint while changing directions; 2) bench press – measures the upper body strength for one repetition; 3) 1.5 mile run – measures cardio/respiratory fitness; 4) sit and reach – measures the flexibility in the lower back, legs and shoulders; and 5) body composition – measures the body fat. Prior to appointment, applicants will be tested in all five components, but only the agility run, bench press and 1.5 mile run will be measured for a passing score in the 25th percentile (age and gender adjusted) of these components. These procedures will ensure that law enforcement officers are capable of performing strenuous physical training and law enforcement duties. Applicants shall be disqualified for appointment if they fail to meet any physical requirements. Probationary or seasonal employment is subject to termination for failure to meet the 25th percentile in each of the identified components being measured.
Occupancy of government quarters is required . Selectees must either live in government quarters or reside near enough to meet response time requirements of 15 minutes for law enforcement and 10 minutes for structural fire.
