Solar Cookers International (SCI) is seeking an experienced, innovative, outgoing individual with a proven track record of raising funds, and building partnerships and brand recognition for an international nonprofit. This is a full-time, career position for the worldwide office, located in Sacramento, California.


Our idea of an excellent Development Director is one who understands the exciting role philanthropy plays in a well-lived life, and enjoys developing relationships with people that allow them to use wealth to make their compassionate goals a reality. The Development Director reports to the ED and implements strategies and initiatives designed to obtain support from individuals, foundations, and corporations. The Development Director will lead all aspects of fund development, including direct mail, the donor database, gift processing, donor recognition, multi-channel integration, major gifts, and stewardship and corporate support.


The successful candidate will work with existing staff to build on past efforts and launch new ones for a stronger fundraising organization. There are many exciting, new opportunities for funding, and SCI is looking for the right person who will help us expand our income streams.


Responsibilities


  • Develop a clear and compelling case for support and convey that case in written materials and to various constituencies.

  • Build understanding and support for that case among SCI’s constituencies, both internal and external audiences.

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors and ED to create a fund development plan which increases revenues to support the strategic direction of the organization.

  • Create and execute a strategy for a sustained base of annual individual donors.

  • Develop fundraising policies and procedures.

  • Identify, research, manage and assist in soliciting major donors and sponsors—individuals, foundations and corporations.

  • Track and report all gifts and pledges by sources and purpose.

  • Foster an understanding of philanthropy within the organization.

Desired Skills and Experience


  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations including advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera.

  • Knowledge of Solar Cookers International, its achievements, vision, mission, goals, objectives, applicable policies, infrastructure, general knowledge and current issues facing a US-based INGO.

  • Expert written, oral and interpersonal communications skills, to build and maintain effective working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.

  • Expert skills in meeting predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts, meeting and exceeding fundraising goals.

  • Expert strategic planning, critical thinking, analytical problem-solving, and marketing skills.

  • Experience establishing effective relationships with organization leadership.

  • Exhibit knowledge of organizational effectiveness, health and safety, and a commitment to diversity.

Qualifications


The ideal candidate will have development experience, ideally in an “in-house” leadership role within a complex nonprofit organization, and covering areas such as direct mail, donor and member communications, and database management. The successful candidate will have at least a Bachelor"s degree. Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible, full-time professional experience in development and fundraising programs is a must.


  • Experience developing and implementing and integrated fundraising strategy, including direct mail, email and social media.

  • Proven success in reaching, often exceeding, fundraising goals.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position fundraising discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels.

  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, members, donors, and other supporters.

  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.

  • Adaptive and flexible; able to work in a shared work space and flexible hours as needed and required.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and donor software.
