Position Summary


Freedom House is seeking a full-time Program Associate to support programs related to advancing democracy and human rights in Southeast Asia. The Program Associate will provide assistance in various aspects of program implementation, including research, new project development, reporting, outreach, and logistical and administrative support. The Program Associate will be based in DC and report to the Senior Program Officer for Southeast Asia. The initial appointment is for approximately one year. Employment beyond one year will be contingent on funding.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, development studies, international relations, human rights, international law, or another relevant field. Master’s degree preferred.

  • 1-2 years of relevant professional experience

  • Interest and experience working on issues pertaining to the Southeast Asia region, particularly Burma/Myanmar

  • Experience with human rights defense work, including knowledge of human rights principles and international mechanisms

  • Mastery of MS Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Demonstrated experience in managing and creating budgets in Excel.

  • Ability to work as an effective team member for the success of shared goals and objectives

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and meet all goals and deadlines

  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Provide programmatic, logistical, and administrative support to the department

  • Prepare and review financial reports and payment requests in compliance with Freedom House and donor requirements

  • Draft press releases, briefings, quarterly project reports, and project proposals

  • Provide research assistance and analysis related to political and social developments in the region. Monitor regional news and events pertaining to human rights, democracy, and fundamental freedoms.

  • Assist with developing and implementing advocacy strategies for the region

  • Other duties as assigned
