DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE
These positions are open to the general public and all current city employees covered under the City’s Collective Bargaining Agreement with PUBLIC SAFETY SERVICE EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION (S.E.I.U.) LOCAL 73 (I.B.E.W) LOCAL 21 (BU 02). Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid on this position.
Number of Positions: 6
Under supervision, enforces the City’s parking ordinances, patrolling an assigned area to identify vehicles violating parking regulations and restrictions and issuing parking citations, and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Carriers/wears and operates hand-held computer equipment to issue citations for parking violations pertaining to street signs, parking meters, and fire hydrants
Enters license plate numbers and related data into a hand-held computer to record vehicle, location, and type of parking violation
Prints out and issues parking tickets, typically placing violation notice on vehicle
Operates a hand-help computer to check vehicle license plate numbers to identify stolen vehicles or vehicles that are eligible for booting
Reports stolen vehicles to the appropriate unit for recovery
Reports damaged or missing street signs and parking meters for repair or replacement
Testifies in court on citations issued for parking violations are required
Prepares daily activity reports
Responds to general inquiries and gives geographic directions to the public
Uses a two-way radio to communicate from the field with office personnel

Qualifications
Willingness and ability to perform the duties of the job. A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required.
NOTE:
You must provide your valid U.S. driver’s license at time of processing

Exposure to outdoor weather conditions
Exposure to loud noise, fumes, or dust
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to walk and stand for extended or continuous periods of time
Ability to carry/wear and operate hand-held computer and printer equipment
Education & Employment Verification
– Please be advised that if you are selected to be hired you must provide, upon request, adequate information regarding your educational and employment history as it relates to the qualifications of the position for which you are applying. If you received your degree internationally, all international transcripts/diploma must be accompanied by a Foreign Credential Evaluation. If the City of Chicago cannot verify this information, any offer extended to you will be withdrawn and you will not be hired.
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires bidders and applicants to complete a written test/skills assessment(s). Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been analyzed and compiled. Bidders who receive a passing scored on the test will be hired in
seniority order
according to the collective bargaining agreement. Applicants who receive a passing score on the test will be hired in
lottery/random order
.
VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE:
The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel
AND
military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documents. In order to receive the veterans preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they are a veteran by answering “yes” or “no” to the question on the online application that asks, “Are you currently serving on active duty for at least six months in the Armed Forces of the United States
OR
have you served in the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty for at least six months and received an honorable or general discharge?”
In addition, you must attach documentation to verify your military service. For veterans, you must attach a copy of your DD214 (Member Copy-4) to your online application which includes character of service status
OR
a letter from the United States Veterans Administration on official stationary stating dates of service and character of service. For active military personnel, you must attach a letter from your Commanding Office on official stationary verifying your active duty, length of service, and character of service in the Armed Forces of the United States
AND
a copy of your military ID to your online application.
Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.
Evaluation:
Your initial evaluation will be based on information provided on the application form and documents submitted with the application. Applications must be submitted by the individual applicant. No second party applicants will be accepted.
Residency Requirement:
An employee must be an actual resident of the City of Chicago. Proof of residency will be required at the time of employment.
