Description:
This position will be housed in the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (RMNCH) Division at FHI 360. The RMNCH division seeks to improve RMNCH through excellence in programs and research.
Job Summary / Responsibilities:
The Research Associate II works with senior research staff within the RMNCH division and with other departments within FHI 360 to implement, manage, and conduct research studies and projects, lead qualitative components of studies, and will participate in proposal writing efforts to the larger RMNH Division.
Project responsibilities include:
- Project management of research studies including: monitoring finances, leading team meetings, tracking project progress, leading communications with collaborating organizations in the field, tracking sub-contracts, IRB submissions, and working with team to ensure studies are implemented within timeline, scope, and budget.
- Coding, analysis, and report writing of qualitative data. Ensuring quality of qualitative data collected. Experience in NVivo preferred.
- Proposal writing responsibilities include: conducting literature reviews, development of graphics using PowerPoint, organizing references using EndNote.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Assists with the design and implementation of research studies.
- Provides input with questionnaire development, analysis, study design, and material management.
- Develops training materials and conducts training for study implementation based on company policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Develops, reviews, and maintains key study documents to ensure adequate resource and reference documentation.
- Ensures compliance with government regulations when writing and reviewing protocols, analysis plans, reports, and manuscripts. Provides guidance on any protocol related issues.
- May act as team lead and mentors staff on training, systems, policies, and regulations.
- Serves as the liaison with internal and external partners to ensure effective collaboration efforts.
- Oversees planning of meetings, site visits, and drafting necessary documents.
- Travel 10-25%, domestic and/or internationally.
Example Project Description:
One task of the Research Associate II (~50%) will be to serve as the project manager and the qualitative data analyst for a 2-year study among vulnerable South African youth at-risk for HIV. The purpose of the study is to assess whether the integration of an economic strengthening program with an HIV –prevention education program produces synergistic effects on economic and health outcomes and to test the effects of an integrated model. The study is part of the ASPIRES (Accelerating Strategies for Practical Innovation and Research in Economic Strengthening) project, funded by USAID and PEPFAR. ASPIRES supports evidence-based, gender-sensitive programming to improve the economic security and well-being outcomes of vulnerable families and children, particularly those infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS, and others at high risk of acquiring HIV.
Skills & Characteristics:
- Content expertise required in at least one area: RMNCH, HIV prevention, adolescent health, family planning, economic strengthening, or international development. Previous proposal development experience helpful.
- Seasoned writer and communicator: demonstrated ability to target communications to audience. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Effective communicator with team members. Articulate, professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive fashion with clients and staff.
- Research and Project Management:Working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures for conducting research studies under government regulations. Strong knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures of project management and communication.
- Software savvy: Strong knowledge of software programs used to perform qualitative data analysis, basic quantitative data analysis, as well as project management (e.g., NVivo, Atlas.ti, Stata, SAS, EpiData, Smartsheet). Proficiency in Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, analytical software and other technology required.

Qualifications:
- Master"s Degree or its International Equivalent preferred.
- 5+ years of combined research or evaluation experience with writing manuscripts, study implementation and project management.
- Previous experience with proposal development.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data, identify errors and prepare reports.
- Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.
