This position is located at the Pimmit Hills Senior Center, 7510 Lisle Avenue, Falls Church, Virginia. Plans, develops, implements, manages, and evaluates outcome-based inclusive recreation programs, educational and lifelong programs, technology programs, health and wellness programs, fitness classes, community service projects, volunteers programs, community outings, and special events for older adults to address identified trends, needs, and interests. Works as a member of the regional team to implement county-wide projects and activity strategies focused on obtaining specific outcomes for older adults reducing at risk behavior by working collaboratively with multiple public and private human services agencies. Hires, trains, coaches, and supervises merit and part-time staff and coordinates volunteers. Provides the highest quality of customer service to Fairfax County residents living in the community. Performs administrative tasks including reporting statistical data for monthly reports and fiscal management including collection of money and managing a budget. Manages facility scheduling and daily operations. Obtains equipment and supplies; and executes programs policies, procedures, marketing, and program calendars. Conducts outreach and recruitment to connect older adults to programs and services. Supports community outreach by assisting in the development of partnerships with community, non-profit, and faith-based organizations. Facilitates involvement of older adults with disabilities and assists in implementation of modified and adapted activities for that function at varying levels.
Illustrative Duties: Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Employment Standards: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in recreation and park management, therapeutic recreation, or other closely related field; plus two years of progressively responsible experience in park or recreation services related work, as applicable to the position.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Valid motor vehicle operator’s license; and valid Food Handler (VA), First Aid, CPR and AED Certification within 90 days of appointment.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Appointee must complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, and a driver’s license check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bilingual ability in English and another language. Master’s degree in recreation, gerontology or related field. Certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist or eligibility for certification within one year. Experience with the following: community-based senior recreation programming; community and/or senior center operations and prevention-oriented programs for older adults; community-based recreation programming for individuals with disabilities; supervising recreation employees; conducting outreach and programming to diverse cultures; outcome-based recreation programming; working with self-directed teams; managing multiple programs and projects; coordinating volunteer programs and services; and developing partnerships, sponsorships or collaborative programs and services with public and private agencies.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Job may require standing, running, jumping, etc., to demonstrate recreation activities. Work performed in a center environment. Must be able to communicate with others. May be required to lift up to 15 pounds. Requires the ability to use keyboard-driven equipment. Duties can be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
