Opening
MTA Metro-North Railroad is a dynamic organization, operating out of the jewel of New York City, Grand Central Terminal. Responsibilities
Signal Trainees are responsible to assist in the installation, construction, inspection, repair, maintenance and testing of signal circuitry and equipment.
Major duties include: Install, inspect, test, maintain or repair grade crossing warning systems, signals, switches, cables, batteries, signal foundations and interlocking systems.
Duties include loading and unloading of supplies, digging holes and trenches for cables, painting signal equipment, and climbing and working on elevated bridges and signal masts. Work is primarily outdoors and exposed to all types of weather conditions.
Practice Safe Work Habits.
Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices and procedures; wear prescribed safety apparel; take appropriate action when conditions threaten safety of self or coworkers; ensure equipment and work area are in safe operating condition before starting work.
Qualifications
Experience with large motors and relay/relay logic a plus.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Must have the ability to read and use digital and analog multimeter.
Must have mechanical ability.
Must have good oral and written communication skills.
Must be able to lift and carry tools and material weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
Must be able to climb to heights of 65 feet.
Experience in the electrical craft is desired.
Must be able to work along right-of-way in close proximity to moving railroad
equipment.
Must be able to work in close proximity to 700 VDC third rail.
Must possess a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
Rate of Pay
The wage progression scale is as follows: 70 >70 >75 >80 >85 >85 >90 >100%. The full 100% rate of pay is $35.32/hour.
Seniority
New employees will establish seniority in the Association of Commuter Rail Employees (ACRE-166), the union representing Signal Trainees, in accordance with the union’s current collective bargaining agreement.
Assignments
Must have the ability to work various hours, days, shifts and locations (Stamford and New Haven CT, Croton Harmon, North White Plains, and Brewster NY, GCT area, and other outlying locations in NY and CT).
Selection Criteria
To be selected for a position, an applicant must: (1) meet the minimum requirements in the job posting, (2) pass a written examination (if applicable), (3) satisfy a background investigation (which includes credit, if applicable), and (4) pass an oral interview, during which the interviewers will further evaluate the applicant’s qualifications for the position. Because the selection process is competitive, not all qualified applicants are granted an interview. Metro-North may also require the applicant to undergo a physical ability test, and, if the Company extends a conditional offer, may require him or her to undergo a medical examination, which may include toxicological testing.
For applicants who are current employees, you must be in active service and have worked in your present position for at least one (1) year to be eligible to apply for a posted position, and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, plus on-the-job training, if applicable (for example: Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.) in order to be eligible to transfer. If you are transferred, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present occupation. In addition, Metro-North employees are subjected to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation of their safety and discipline records and their performance assessments.

Other Information
This is a safety sensitive position and subject to toxicological testing.
Signal Trainees are to participate in a 2 year formal training program with no transfers/promotions to other departments for a 3 year period.
