Summary/Objective: Journey House empowers families living on Milwaukee’s near Southside to move out of poverty by offering adult education, workforce readiness, youth development, and family engagement programs.
Under the direction of the Youth Program Director/Deputy Director, the Girls in the House (GITH) Youth Development Specialist facilitates age appropriate programs and activities for urban girls ages 8 to 18 with an emphasis on leadership development and strengthening individual and group self-esteem. The GITH Youth Development Specialist will work closely with Youth Program staff, the Esquires male youth development specialist, the Community Engagement Program and Urban Careers Institute workforce readiness program in evaluating educational and career interests and counseling girls on college, work and personal decisions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential duties will include working with the youth programs team to develop and sustain meaningful arts, academics, and athletics programs for all youth and young adults participating in after-school programming.
- Implement a written curriculum that addresses self-esteem, positive relationships, stress and anger management, health and nutrition, money management, and decision-making for GITH program.
- Design and implement daily activities (academic tutoring, computer activities, games, field trips, etc.) for GITH and other youth program participants.
- Provide the Director of Youth Programs with written reports, schedule of activities and program descriptions.
- Coordinate efforts with fellow youth programs staff on daily operations and staffing needs to assure a safe and respectful environment for participants.
- Initiate and lead special projects that match the Journey House mission and goals of the GITH Program.
- Assist in daily site maintenance to assure a clean and well-organized environment in which to work, play, and learn.
- Provide exposure to higher education through coordination with the College Careers Program.
- Facilitate special events, field trips, and workshops.
- Create and administer GITH surveys for evaluation and planning purposes.
- Ensure that accurate up-to-date program demographics, attendance, and program outcome, information is entered into the United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM) database.
- Provide information as requested and in a timely manner for program reports, community enquiries, and information for grant proposals.
- Meet regularly with Youth programs Team to strategize upcoming events, maintain schedules, and discuss participant behaviors and accomplishments.
- Ensure the safety of all participants by being present during activities. Have a presence during activities to help direct traffic, control issues such as wondering and fighting, and maintain a positive flow for participants after 4pm every day.
- Develop and nurture partnerships with community members, businesses and other resource providers interested in sharing knowledge and experience with GITH and Youth Program participants.
- Form relationships with the participants and their parents to ensure they know the rules and expectations to attend Journey House activities.
- Participate in YES! and Community Building mandated staff trainings.
- Follow company protocol for scheduling events, making room reservations, and creating flyers/marketing materials for youth program events.
- Work with the Director of Community Relations on special events.
- Attend and participate in agency and Youth Program staff meetings and events.

EDUCATION and COMPETENCIES:
- BA/BS in social work, education, or commensurate experience preferred.
- Two years’ experience working with female urban teens from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Excellent oral and written skills; ability to represent the agency.
- Experience in curriculum development.
- Knowledge of programs available for children and girls.
- Creative, innovative, flexible, ability to work without direct supervision and with limited resources.
- Ability to adjust to crisis situations, and motivate others.
- Strong case management skills.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) in oral and written communication preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications [Word, Excel, PowerPoint], databases and Internet.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
