United States of America: Nutrition Advisor


As part of the Washington DC-based Nutrition Team, the Advisor, Nutrition provides technical support for Save the Children (SC) nutrition programs and policies. The Advisor, Nutrition manages a portfolio of on-going programs focused on the areas of: food security, multi-sector programming including food aid programs, and nutrition integrated with agriculture/livelihoods and WASH. The Advisor, Nutrition leads technical assistance provided to programs in West Africa, and also supports nutrition team efforts globally. S/he produces documentation including developing proposals, and contributes to resource mobilization more generally in this region and in these technical areas and others. The Advisor, Nutrition works within the Nutrition Team of SC’s Department of Global Health and collaborates closely with the Hunger and Livelihoods Department, and with members of Save the Children International (SCI) to work toward advancing SCI’s global nutrition agenda.


Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Impact


In collaboration with the Senior Advisor, Nutrition and the Senior Director, Nutrition, the Advisor, Nutrition supports program/project development and implementation of a nutrition program portfolio in the Africa region. S/he will work closely with project technical and management (COPs) to determine and meet technical assistance needs, including documentation of program progress and results. The Advisor, Nutrition participates more broadly in the Nutrition Team’s resource mobilization, learning and capacity building efforts cutting across SC-US as well as Save the Children International.


Technical Leadership and Support for SC Nutrition Program (50%)


  • Provides direct and distance technical assistance to country offices in nutrition technical areas including food security, nutrition and WASH, nutrition and livelihoods/agriculture, maternal, infant and young child nutrition. Current country programs in this portfolio include Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia.

  • Leads and participates in country office nutrition program planning and implementation, national/area assessments, formative and operations research activities, and baseline, midterm and final evaluations.

  • Supports outreach and coordination initiatives with other offices within the agency (WWO and country level), including the Food Security Coordination Group.

  • Represents SC/DGH externally on targeted technical topics with donors and technical organizations related to food aid and multi-sectoral nutrition.

Resource Mobilization from Public and Private sources (30%)


• Fosters and maintains relationships with international program colleagues, especially within DGH and the Livelihoods Department.


• Contributes to agency knowledge and decision-making concerning pursuit of funding opportunities.


• Leads the design and development of nutrition elements/aspects of nutrition, food security and related grant proposals.


• Supports timely development, review and submission of high quality proposals in response to identified opportunities, in accordance with agency strategies.


Program Learning, Innovation and Capacity Development (10%)


• Monitors new developments in area of food security/food aid; nutrition and livelihoods/agriculture; and nutrition and WASH, especially within the West Africa context, and seeks to identify opportunities for documentation and dissemination.


• Participates/Leads in planning and implementation of training and technical support workshops, and other capacity building activities. Key topic areas are food security, nutrition and agriculture/livelihoods.


Knowledge Management and Documentation (10%)


  • Produces documentation of best practices and innovations from SC field programs. Prepares and edits reports for donors and other external readers as needed and assists with internal SC/US and SCI planning and reporting.

  • In collaboration with the Senior Director liaise with policy and advocacy team and the Global Initiative for Health and Nutrition. Review and provide input on policy and technical documents, as required.

Required Background and Experience, Skills and Behaviors


  • Master’s degree, nutrition, or public health with nutrition emphasis.

  • At least 10 years’ experience in international development primarily in nutrition

  • Experience working on nutrition programs and/or other related areas (food security, education etc.) in Africa or other countries

  • Thorough understanding of food security, nutrition and agriculture, food aid (including food commodities) and multi- sector nutrition programming; maternal, infant and child nutrition; nutrition and social and behavior change approaches

  • Excellent written and oral communications and negotiating skills; proficiency in French required.

  • Knowledge and experience with donor requirements for program implementation and reporting requirements desirable

  • Able to develop and implement nutrition monitoring and evaluation activities, statistical analysis skills desirable

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and in team situations

  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally about 30% of time
