CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The Academic Program Specialist is housed at the Queens Educational Opportunity Center at York College, located at 158-29 Archer Avenue, Jamaica, Queens.
The Academic Program Specialist reports directly to the Director of Student Support Services and is responsible to provide guidance and advisement for EOC students participating in foundational and academic programs as well as oversight for all aspects of College Connections initiatives. Regular evenings and some weekend work will be required.
Duties for this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Establish a working knowledge of EOC guidelines as they pertain to admissions, eligibility and program operations.
- Together with the Director, guide the planning and development of the College Preparation program which includes academic and other orientation programs, academic advisement models, and outreach and referral strategies. She/he will also provide advisement regarding academic requirements, career opportunities and scholarship information.
- Lead group workshops and assist individual students with academic skills such as time management, note taking, test taking and study habits.
- Submit data-based reports as part of Student Support Services staff as well as outcome-based reports for College Connections initiatives.
- Advise students regarding academic progress/probation and related matters.
- Support retention efforts and monitor student progress at the Center in the following functions: a) maintain accurate records of participants seeking and obtaining academic/remedial placement; b) participate in recruitment/outreach activities and in the development / implementation of effective networking strategies with local providers.
- Develop and maintain an on-going rapport with higher education institutions; act as a liaison between EOC and college-related programs/services entities.
- Work with specialized populations such as disabled students and veterans regarding reasonable accommodations/services related to disabilities. Additionally, some responsibility for the Center’s intake/admissions/registration process as well as attending college fairs and conferences to network with college representatives will be expected.
- Plan special activities/projects to meet Center, program, staff and student needs related to academic performances, progress and positive outcomes.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree and four years’ relevant experience required.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The Master’s degree in Education or other Social Science discipline preferred, as is at least three years’ experience working with an academically and economically underprepared population.
Familiarity with strategies that promote an increase in college attendance and completion is highly preferred. Evidence of strong desire to help students realize their potential. Knowledge of college admissions and financial aid process. Knowledge of educational opportunity programs e.g. SEEK and College Discovery. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communications skills. Knowledge of BANNER, Microsoft, Power Point and Excel.

Compensation for this position is commensurate with salary history, experience, and credentials.
