INTERN: Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict (www.watchlist.org) is seeking an intern to work between 15 and 20 hours a week from May 2015 through August 2015, with the possibility of extension.
ORGANIZATION: Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict (‘Watchlist’) is an NGO network that monitors and reports on violations against the security and rights of children and adolescents in specific situations of armed conflict. Watchlist uses this information to urge action by the UN Security Council, UN agencies, and appropriate governments. Watchlist also provides support to local NGO partners in areas of conflict to build sustainable, grassroots monitoring, reporting, and advocacy networks related to violations against children in armed conflicts. Watchlist is a fiscally-sponsored project of the Tides Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and the nation’s largest fiscal sponsor.
During summer months, the intern will work on research and media projects related to Watchlist’s report production and publication, as well as other ongoing research and communications related initiatives through different programmatic areas. A percentage of the intern’s time will be dedicated to policy research in support of Watchlist’s Advocacy Program.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with research pertinent to the drafting and publication of Watchlist’s 2015 research report on attacks on and military use of schools in the Central African Republic
- Assist with the development and implementation of Watchlist’s media and advocacy strategy with respect to the research report, including outreach, dissemination, tracking for impact, launches and other tasks
- Draft social media messages and other communications materials
- Perform background policy research for the publication of Watchlist’s Children and Armed Conflict Monthly Updates in preparation for the UN Security Council’s consideration of specific country situations pertaining to child protection
- Support the Advocacy Officer with preparation for, and possibly attend, the forthcoming Open Debate on Children and Armed Conflict at the UN Security Council in mid-June
- Assist with administrative tasks and other special projects when necessary
REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduate student in international relations, law, human rights, communications, journalism, or relevant field
- Strong research, analytical, and writing skills
- Strong interest in issues related to children in armed conflict, child protection, human rights, and humanitarian concerns
- Knowledge of international human rights and humanitarian mechanisms and policies
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Ability to work in a team and independently, with minimal supervision
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Fluency in French highly desired
- Experience with GIS and humanitarian mapping a plus
- Knowledge of WordPress and MailChimp a plus
