Permit Specialist job - Allen County, IN - Fort Wayne, IN



This position is full-time, nonexempt, classified and covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Hours are 8:00 am – 4:30 pm and as needed; overtime as required


The Permit Specialist works under the direction of the Senior Permit Specialist to issue building permits and licenses and collect appropriate fees.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Issues building permits and licenses providing excellent customer service.

  • Answers incoming telephone calls, responds to inquirers and/or routes caller to appropriate person or department.

  • Assists with license renewal of contractors.

  • Posts permit numbers to packets and purges packets for microfilm and files.

  • Calculates and collects appropriate fees.

  • Maintains the cash drawer and sorts mail.

  • Monitors state releases for commercial projects.

  • Assists with other projects as needed.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.


Minimum Requirements and Working Conditions


REQUIREMENTS:


  • High School Diploma or GED and at least one year experience with computer skills, customer service, and bookkeeping

  • Strong computer skills including the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job related software

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Ability to use various office equipment including scanning equipment, multi-line phone, copier and two-way radio

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Permit Specialist works in a standard office environment with the ability to move around requiring frequent sitting, some bending and kneeling. Frequent typing including proofreading and attention to detail is required.
