United States of America: Director, Nutrition


The overall responsibility of the Director, Nutrition is to provide program management, operational, resource mobilization and representation leadership, oversight, and support to the nutrition team. S/he has broad responsibilities working closely with the Senior Director, Nutrition to ensure efficient and coordinated functioning of the nutrition team as a whole and achieving DGH and the nutrition teams’ overarching goals. This position is critical to support the current large nutrition portfolio and enable further growth both internal and external to Save the Children.


Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Impact


Resource Mobilization (35%)


In conjunction with the Senior Director, plays a leadership role in identification and positioning for new business, and the development of quality proposals in support of SC’s technical and programming priorities in nutrition. She/he will be a point of contact for resource mobilization for nutrition work with DGH and DHL, liaise with country offices, identify and manage consultants engaged in proposal development and serve on proposal development teams as team integrator or technical writer on select procurements as needed.


Country Program Support (35%)


Provide oversight and leadership support to select countries in the nutrition portfolio including regular review of program progress and results, annual workplans and budgets (in coordination with awards manager), participation, as needed in DGH quarterly reviews , and communicate regularly with and support to country teams . Supervise selected chiefs of parties/project directors to ensure effective programming and delivery of results. Coordinate provision of technical assistance to countries and recruitment of consultants to fulfill TA needs, as needed. Create linkages and foster collaboration among home office functions in support of country programs and work closely with other DGH thematic teams.


Representation and leadership (15%)


Serve as a visible, senior member of the nutrition team in the Washington D.C. office. Represent the nutrition team in meetings and agency wide priorities (i.e. Global Initiative for Health and Nutrition, Policy and Advocacy meetings), as needed. Facilitate nutrition team meetings, manage the team list serve and act as point of contact for DGH operations. Attend meetings on behalf of the nutrition team in the broader nutrition community for SC US as requested.


Documentation (15%)


Identifies best practices from country programs and global work, documents these practices, and disseminates and promotes uptake within the agency and beyond. Liaise with policy and advocacy team on a regular basis and the Global Initiative for Health and Nutrition. Review and provide input on policy and technical documents. .


Required Background and Experience, Skills and Behaviors


  • Master’s degree, nutrition, public health, international development or a related field

  • At least 10 years’ experience in international development

  • Previous experience managing and mentoring team members/junior staff

  • Experience working on nutrition programs and other related areas (food security, education etc.)

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and in team situations

  • Excellent written and oral communications and negotiating skills; proficiency in French preferred.

  • Strategic decision making skills; identifying key issues and long-term goal/vision.

  • Knowledge and experience with donor requirements for program implementation and reporting requirements

  • Program management skills including technical leadership, support and operational planning

  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally.
