Established in 2001, The Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW) is the world’s preeminent hygiene partnership, focusing on knowledge leadership, advocacy leadership, and leveraging partnerships to promote handwashing with soap to drive international development through public health, nutrition, education and equity. With a focus on the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector, the PPPHW aims to drive forward, develop, and share knowledge that strengthens handwashing implementation, and to build political commitment, and trigger action to promote handwashing at local, national, and international levels, including through advocacy initiatives, such as Global Handwashing Day. The PPPHW is managed by a two-person Secretariat and housed by PPPHW partners, currently by FHI 360 in Washington, DC.
Job Summary / Responsibilities:
In close collaboration with the Secretariat Director, the Program Officer I for the Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW) will have the opportunity to significantly contribute to the PPPHW’s business plan through managing communications efforts (including engaging with implementers and partner organizations), contributing to the development of new tools, and supporting the delivery of key events, such as Global Handwashing Day. A keen eye for details, the ability to work under a deadline, and an aptitude for collaboration will be valuable to success in this position.
Responsibilities:
- Manages all aspects of the revision and implementation of the PPPHW’s communications strategy. Grows a follower base; drafts and posts social media messages; drafts blog entries in a timely fashion; proactively seeks opportunities to publish on partner and external blogs; conducts analytics; and manages the PPPHW’s monthly e-newsletter.
- Facilitates communication by answering inquires and monitoring project websites.
- Contributes to the production of advocacy documents, engages with global working groups on an as-needed basis, and supports outreach to advocates.
- Collaborates with the Secretariat Director, consultants, and partners to deliver the latest and best in handwashing and behavior change research to practitioners, academics, and others.
- Supports the development of new tools, keeps a finger on the pulse of the sector, and assists in coordinating major advocacy and knowledge leadership activities, such as Global Handwashing Day and the Handwashing Behavior Change Think Tank.
- Provides support to Secretariat Director, troubleshoots, updates work plan, coordinates travel arrangements, and monitors program activities.
- Documents and shares project accomplishments, challenges, and lessons learned among internal and external partners.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or its international equivalent in Knowledge/Information Services, Communications, Environment, Health, Behavioral, Life/Social Sciences, International Development, Human Development or a related field.
- A minimum of 2-5 years’ experience with public health program management, US Government rules and regulations.
- Articulate and professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive fashion with clients and staff.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.
- Prior work experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO), government agency, or private organization.
- Working knowledge of and a demonstrated interest in partnerships; water, sanitation, and hygiene; and global health. Expertise and interest in cross-cutting sectors (maternal, newborn, and child health; nutrition) particularly useful.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including editing and document review.
- Able to work independently, problem solve, and take initiative.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite software.
- Social media management and experience using WordPress.
- Proven fundraising, donor relations, or external engagement experience strongly preferred.
- Budgetary management experience preferred.
