About Physicians for Human Rights and the Program on Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones

For nearly 30 years, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) has used science and medicine to document and call attention to mass atrocities and severe human rights violations.

A Nobel Peace Prize co-laureate, PHR is a global organization founded on the idea that health professionals, with their specialized skills, ethical duties, and credible voices, are uniquely positioned to stop human rights violations.

The Program on Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones (the Program) at PHR is a multi-year training and advocacy initiative. The goal of the Program is to increase the capacity of clinicians, police officers, lawyers and judges in their ability to collect, document, and preserve court-admissible evidence of sexual violence to support prosecutions of these crimes in East and Central Africa and elsewhere. The Program also helps to cultivate networks of collaboration and coordination among first responders and other stakeholders to improve support for survivors of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Kenya, and elsewhere. The Program draws on PHR’s extensive expertise in documenting human rights violations and providing forensic training to professionals in regions of conflict where mass crimes have been committed.

Our headquarters are located in New York City, and we maintain offices in Washington, DC and in Boston.
