The USAID Education in Conflict and Crisis Network (IDD) has an opening for a Training Specialist,
reporting to Cornelia Janke, USAID ECCN Support Team Project Director in Waltham, MA. This is a half-time position based either in Massachusetts or Washington DC.
POSITION SUMMARY
EDC seeks, for immediate employment, a Training Specialist to be an intregal part of the USAID-funded Education in Conflict and Crisis Network (USAID ECCN). This position is funded by USAID under the Building Evidence and Capacity to Increase Equitable Access to Education in Crisis and Conflict-Affected Environments contract. USAID ECCN is a community of practice composed of USAID education staff, implementing partners and others working to improve policy, design, implementation and evaluation of education programs that increase equitable access to, and improve the quality of, learning opportunities in crisis and conflict affected environments. This five year initiative was established to promote knowledge generation and sharing among practitioners, policy makers and researchers related to Goal 3 of the USAID Education Strategy: improved equitable access to education in crisis and conflict affected environments.
The Training Specialist will join USAID ECCN’s existing 8-person Support Team. His/her role on the team will be to guide, design, implement and evaluate USAID ECCN professional development strategy, planning, materials development and delivery. The Training Specialist will apply his/her demonstrated experience in instructional design theory, research and practice, as well as relevant and innovative ICT tools and approaches (including but not limited to webinars and/or other distance learning approaches), to the process of developing and implementing professional development for USAID education staff and partners, based in the United States and in the crisis and conflict-affected environments where USAID Goal 3 education programming is relevant. Training Speciaist will provide customized training and professional development to meet needs related to improving the impact, scale and sustainability of education programs in conflict and crisis in formal and informal environments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The person in this position is expected to communicate clearly and courteously; to develop and maintain positive relationships with USAID staff, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, field sites, and other funding partners; and to work respectfully with EDC colleagues. The job requires adherence to EDC policies & procedures.
The Training Specialist will:
- Conduct research and needs assessments related to the most effective professional development approaches for USAID staff and partners working in or with contexts in conflict or crisis
- After consulting with relevant specialists, USAID and other ECCN members, plan ECCN’s overall professional development approach
- Write, edit, & plan complex and/or high visibility professional development material
- Design and/or conduct conferences, workshops, and/or e-Learning courses for USAID staff, education authorities, and other practitioners working in Goal 3 countries
- Conceptualize and lead professional development product dissemination, evaluation, and customization
Other tasks or skill sets required by this position include:
- Familiarity with the state of the art for professional development
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize concepts and recommendations
- Demonstrated ability to develop original bodies of work
- Guide feedback exchanges; provides expertise to others
- Oversee administrative and logistical coordination of training activities
- Troubleshoot complex problems and develop solutions
- May provide administrative supervision, technical direction, or project management to consultants
- May travel to countries with complex security issues
- May provide oversight for related events, training and communications.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires educational achievement; excellent writing skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and strong interpersonal & organizational skills. Specific requirements:
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience working in development, preferably in education or another social sector
Minimum of 5 years’ experience creating, leading, or otherwise extensively involved in developing training programs
Minimum of 5 years’ experience as an instructional designer
Demonstrated familiarity with standard and emerging ICT strategies and tools for professional development in contexts with good, as well as nascent, ICT infrastructure and capacity
Master’s degree in related field required; Ph.D preferred
Candidates speaking French, Spanish, or Arabic in addition to English preferred
