The Global Health Writer/Editor (GWE) is a member of the Policy, Advocacy, and Communications (PAC) team and handles production of reports and other documents from raw copy through design and distribution. He or she assists technical staff to prepare high-quality documents by providing editorial assessments and performing substantive editing, such as reorganization and rewrites, as well as copy-editing, proofreading, and accommodating non-native English writers. The GWE provides support to the infectious diseases program as well as other MSH and Health Programs Group (HPG) projects. He or she adjusts quickly to shifting priorities and last-minute requests to meet team goals. The GWE is responsible for tracking various projects such as quarterly reports and helping the communications team stay on deadline.
Specific Responsibilities
- Perform substantive editing as well as copyediting and proofreading of assigned documents, to include quarterly and annual reports, proposals, presentations, newsletters, and outreach communications materials, with minimal oversight by the Senior Communications Manager.
- Outreach materials to include: technical briefs, fact sheets, Web materials, journal abstracts, conference-related posters and other printed matter, video and photo-story scripts, blogs, visual aids, and promotional materials.
- Work with graphic artists, project staff, photographers, videographers, translators, and the PAC team to bring documents through all iterations of corrections to final copy, formatting, design and layout, production or uploading, and dissemination. Perform moderate formatting and layout when freelancers not involved.
- Ensure all work meets USAID, MSH, and HPG branding and style requirements.
- Take full responsibility for assigned documents. Adhere to budgetary guidelines and deadlines.
- Work with authors to resolve queries, obtain approvals, and negotiate any disputed style points. Must be flexible in working with authors and technical experts internationally.
- Manage freelance editors, proofreaders, graphic artists, and other vendors. Draft Statements of Work and prepare outside service agreements. Approve invoices as required, and oversee related administrative tasks performed by PAC support staff.
- Review and comment on draft designs for covers, posters, slides, etc. Maintain style sheets; revise acronym lists, style bibliographies, or reference lists as necessary.Become familiar with the MSH, USAID, and HPG Style Guides, and participate in developing, revising, and implementing quality control mechanisms and guidelines.
- Meet regularly with the PAC team, and with authors and technical staff as needed.
- Maintain integrity of electronic files and hard copies of administrative and manuscript files.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with appropriate training in editing and production. Master’s degree preferred.
- 3 years editing experience
Knowledge and Skills
Required:
- Professional editing experience;
- Interest in global health;
- Familiarity with research, technical writing, copy-editing conventions, document layout, author rights and permissions, fact-checking;
- Demonstrated ability to accurately proofread and review documents for content, layout and formatting consistency;
- Strong MS Word skills, including working in track changes and formatting such as developing table of contents and tables. Also intermediate computer skills in Excel and PowerPoint.
- Proficiency in Google docs and file sharing;
- English fluency required, including speaking, writing, understanding, and reading;
Preferred:
- Experience in Adobe Acrobat, InDesign and data visualization
- Knowledge of Chicago style
- Experience in visual story-telling and photo editing
- Knowledge of Web content management systems
- Experience with global health and USAID projects
- Proficiency in French and/or Spanish desirable.
