United States of America: Research Analyst


NRGI seeks to hire a talented and dynamic individual with excellent quantitative analysis and research skills relevant to the work of the Research and Data team.


The Research and Data team leads NRGI’s research and analysis to advance good governance in resource-rich developing countries. The team produce a mix of applied research, policy analysis and data-driven tools to support NRGI’s evidence based technical assistance and capacity building around the world. A key part of this role is the development of reports such as the Resource Governance Index – for use by policy-makers and other stakeholders to improve understanding and decision making. We provide technical support to our country teams delivering policy assistance and advocacy, as well as our global and regional teams engaged in training government officials and oversight actors in the complex economic challenges associated with resource wealth.


The successful candidate will possess a strong mix of research skills, a keen interest in public policy, especially international development issues, along with experience in quantitative analysis. Proficiency with software packages such as Stata and R will be considered advantageous.


The role will offer an opportunity to play a leading role in the design, delivery and execution of research projects. The role would be particularly suited to a political scientist or economist seeking to apply their applied research skills to the world of policy and international development. This may be appropriate for those seeking a transition from academia or having recently completed a PhD and seeking to gain exposure to a fast-paced policy-oriented research environment.


The Research Analyst would join the Research and Data Team, reporting to the team director.


Responsibilities


The Research Analyst would be responsible for:



  • Contributing research and analytical support to the work of the Research and Data team, including, but not limited, to the Resource Governance Index report and associated quantitative research;




  • Leading and contributing to applied research projects including conducting statistical analysis and the writing of applied research papers;




  • Presentation of research findings at events and other dissemination activities including training programs organized by NRGI for civil society and government audiences;




  • Staying abreast of the academic and policy literature relevant to the issues NRGI works on, and integrating these into NRGI research and analysis;




  • Supporting and developing research in the area of good governance and natural resource wealth;




  • Project management including tracking milestones, program objectives and budgets.



Preferred Qualifications:


  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in relevant field (economics, statistics, political science, development studies, law or international relations);

  • Excellent quantitative analysis skills, esp. statistics, economics (experience with either Stata or R would be desirable);

  • 5 years or more of relevant work/ research experience;

  • Data skills including database management (python, MySQL) or other data skills such as GIS;

  • Knowledge of international development policy issues, the extractive industries, regulatory and institutional standards, and/or transparency and accountability issues,

  • Developing country work experience;

  • A background of working with non-governmental organizations and other relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, international organizations, multi-national companies and civil society;

  • Excellent written communications skills, including an ability to produce high quality written materials;

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;

  • Integrity and professional discretion;

  • Foreign language skills preferred;

  • Some limited travel will be required.
