Communications Manager | ReliefWeb - 2015


The Manager of Communications — Center for Health Services (CHS) is responsible for the implementation of the Center’s external communication strategy, specifically in the development and management of the Global Technical Leads’ (GTLs) communications strategies and communications support to MSH’s projects. The Manager will work with GTLs and project leadership to create compelling messages describing the Center’s results and the importance of their approach to project implementation under the supervision of the Communication Director, CHS. S/he works with Center technical leadership and project leadership to help them convey the current state of affairs and vision in a consistent and transparent manner. In addition, s/he will work the Director of Communications and the Sr. Communications Specialist to develop promotional and technical communications materials, support the Center’s presence at conferences and meetings, manage the Center’s intranet pages, and provide general editorial and written support to the field projects.


Specific Responsibilities:


Communications support to projects:


  • Lead in the development of communications strategies and/or work plans, write and edit technical documents, success stories, collateral material, etc.

  • Guide field-based staff in the implementation of standards and guidelines for communications, and monitor the maintenance of these standards.

  • Develop analytical documents presenting project results and methodologies

  • Provide guidance on USAID branding and content development

  • Train field-based communications personnel
    **
    Communications and knowledge exchange support to Global Technical Leads and the Center for Health Services:**

  • Lead and manage the initiative to better support CHS GTL’s communications activities through the development and implementation of comprehensive knowledge management and communication strategies

  • Liaise with appropriate professional staff to strategize avenues to communicate experiences and achievements with the professional community

  • Identify opportunities to share lessons learned between projects, leading to improved project performance and increased impact

  • Find opportunities for GTLs to advocate for improved policies regarding their areas of technical expertise and provide guidance on the communications strategy

  • Identify innovative ways for GTLs look across their portfolio of projects and share stories of MSH’s total impact in each technical area with a broad external audience, including donors (USAID and others) and other NGOs

  • Research, draft text, edit, and proofread e-correspondence, fact sheets, e-newsletter stories, success stories, and sections of the MSH Annual Report as necessary
    **
    Management of CHS intranet pages:**

  • Oversee the maintenance of CHS intranet pages so that content of the technical and project pages is up-to-date and accurate

  • Maintain conference abstract/presentation archive

  • Work with CHS and corporate staff to implement improvements to the intranet as necessary

    Other duties:**

  • Participate in monthly MSH Communications Group meetings.

Qualifications:


  • 8 years progressive responsibility in communications, at least 5 years of communications support to USAID-funded global health projects

  • Masters or equivalent work experience

  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style

  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required, Adobe Creative Suite preferred

  • Familiarity with publishing process, from design and layout through printing

  • Experience in event management

  • Photography and video skills a plus

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communications skills

  • Proven ability to produce clean, clear, and compelling copy with minimal guidance

  • Proven ability to convey complex information in a manner easily understood by a lay audience; Exceptional ability to analyze information and “find the story”

  • Proven ability to transform dense, awkward writing into clear text

  • Self-starter who is able to work independently; Detail oriented and able to work with minimal supervision

  • Organized with good multi-tasking capabilities

  • Domestic and international travel up to 20%
