The Contractor Safety Specialist will provide technical expertise to manage and improve Site contractor safety at the site(s) to which they are assigned. (A Contractor Safety Specialist may have responsibilities for more than one location based on the size, complexity and activity of the site.) The position will work primarily at the daily task level and will be responsible for monitoring contractor safety programs, increasing contractor’s safety awareness, and assisting the
site in the realization of it EHS goals and Zero Incident Mindset. The ability to motivate and coach others at all levels of the organization is critical (business personnel, contract administrators, construction engineers, and site leadership).
The result of the Contractor Safety Specialist work will be the protection of contractors and BASF assets by eliminating incident, injury, illness, property damage, and environmental risk. The Contractor Safety Specialist position has been created to facilitate and support the implementation of contractor safety programs at the employee level in the field.
• Tactical:
- 80% of time focused on field activities
- Conduct / oversee Contractor job observation process
- Participate in Contractor on-boarding / pre job kickoff meeting
- Communicate BASF safety expectations
- Conduct and oversee Contractor audits
- Conduct and oversee Incident / Injury review
- Contractor incident investigations oversight

- Build strong partnering relationships between sites and contractors
- Drive safety process / performance improvements

The Contractor Safety Specialist will spend approximately 80% of their time in the field interacting with contractors and with all levels of site personnel responsible for directing daily activity of contractor personnel. The position will communicate with the Contractor Management Steering Team, Technical and Engineering Services (TES) Managers, Regional Service Center (RSC) Managers, Operations Managers, and Site Managers to evaluate Contractor Safety effectiveness and needs. The Contractor Safety Specialist must be a strategic thinker with the ability to influence others and gain concurrence and ultimately obtain resolution on a diverse range of topics. A willingness and motivation to attend training to develop additional skills will be required.
This position will have to have a fundamental understanding of the operations from a technical perspective to enable effective decision making. Incumbent will receive broad/limited direction from the Contracted Services Manager / Contractor Safety Steering Team and the Contractor Safety Coordinator (OSIH CoE).
Interacts frequently with site personnel responsible for directing daily activity of contractor personnel as well as the contractors. The job holder must be willing to engage co-workers, contractors, and supervision in discussions related to
contractor safety topics and work with personnel to improve contractor safety culture in a non-confrontational manner while ensuring compliance with BASF EHS requirements and principals. Leadership, team building, and communication
are necessary traits to help drive an effective contractor safety EHS culture. This position will also have involvement in local contractor safety conferences/forums as well as demonstrating BASF commitment by periodically attending the
contractor companies’ safety meetings where appropriate.
This position could expect up to 5% travel. Travel will be dependent upon specific assignment.
Qualifications – BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
BS Degree and minimum of 8+ years of professional experience, OR an Associates Degree and a minimum of 10+ years experience, OR a HS diploma/GED and a minimum of 12+ years of experience in a chemical/ petrochemical or other similar manufacturing environment required.
Requires familiarity with EHS and applicable construction safety regulatory standards.
Must have basic computer skills.
Must have generic competencies of analytical thinking, communication and interpersonal understanding, customer focus, entrepreneurial acting/initiative, team leadership/collaboration, results orientation, organization awareness, and change orientation/management.
Desired:
Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
4+ years in industrial safety role, working with contractors, strongly preferred

This position requires all candidates to either currently possess or obtain and maintain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) Card from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
