Director, Advocacy, Communications & Knowledge Management, Saving Newborn Lives - 2015


Summary:


The Director for Advocacy, Communications & Knowledge Management leads one of the four units of the Saving Newborn Lives project (SNL), a multi-year project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Director is a member of SNL’s Senior Management Team and is responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of SNL’s advocacy, communications and knowledge management strategies, both at the global level, and for the seven countries in SNL’s portfolio. S/he also maintains key relationships with external and internal partners advocating for newborn health.


Responsibilities:


  • Oversee the development, implementation, monitoring and outcomes of the communications, advocacy and knowledge management strategies.

  • Provide guidance to SNL country teams for the development of in-country partnerships, and advocacy, communication and knowledge management strategies that link with SNL global outreach efforts.

  • Working with the SNL Director and the other SNL units, provide leadership for development and implementation of SNL’s purpose-driven partnerships and strategic alliance building, including participation in relevant working groups and steering committees.

  • Coordinate, liaise, and actively strengthen linkages with Save the Children International’s EveryOne Campaign, Save the Children’s Public Affairs and Communications, and Public Policy and Advocacy Units as well as with key partner coalitions such as the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH), Maternal and Child Survival Project (MCSP), the Maternal Health Task Force, Family Care International, and the Countdown to 2015 on communications, advocacy and media matters.

  • Provide leadership in the development, production, and implementation of key communications systems and tools such as SNL web pages, e-newsletters, etc. to support SNL’s dissemination strategy to increase support of and access to newborn health issues and information, including the promotion of the Healthy Newborn Network (HNN) as a knowledge and hub for engaging new and existing partners and audiences.

Background and Experience:


  • Master’s degree in communications or related field; background or knowledge of international public health required.

  • At least ten years of experience in the development of communication and advocacy strategies with proven leadership designing and implementing results-oriented strategic communications plans for developing country-level programs and global projects.

  • Developing country work experience required.

  • Strong management and strategic planning skills, able to prioritize, and able to manage competing demands.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in dissemination, print, video and online media, preferably related to maternal and child health.

  • Experience and expertise working with key media and policy-level counterparts.

  • Experience establishing and fostering partnerships with key international development partners including UN agencies, donors and other NGOs.

  • Excellent English writing and communication skills on maternal, newborn, and child health policy and research issues.

  • Excellent interpersonal and cross cultural skills and the ability to work both independently and as a team member with diverse headquarters, field office, partner agency staff, and developing country officials.

  • Computer literacy in word processing, publication, graphics, and spreadsheet software packages.

  • Able to travel 20 percent of the time, mostly internationally.
