Page positions are typically part-time appointments ranging from 20 hours per week to 36 hours per week. Hours for these appointments will include weekdays, weekends and evenings. This classification is part of a bargaining unit represented by AFSCME; upon employment the individuals selected must join the union and pay dues.


Process Description


Applicants must submit application materials for the Continuous Recruitment Process during advertised application periods. Applicants who are invited for a qualifying interview and skills assessment will be contacted via phone or e-mail to schedule an interview time. The qualifying interview will consist of a 45-minute panel interview and an alpha-numeric filing skills assessment. Candidates who are identified as competitive for a specific classification by the qualifying interview panel will be notified of their success in the qualifying interview process and will be eligible to indicate interest and compete for specific vacancies as new vacancies are announced. Applicants who are not being considered for a qualifying interview may not be contacted by Human Resources.


Overview


The Seattle Public Library is Seattle’s center of information and knowledge and one of the most popular and valued services in the city. Library staff members are highly regarded by the public for their knowledge, quality of service and caring. The Page classification is a rewarding, albeit physically demanding, position; playing an important role in the flow of materials throughout the library system. This position is responsible for sorting, shelving, retrieving, and checking the accuracy of materials on the shelves at the Central Library. Pages may also provide directional assistance to Library patrons. In some instances, Pages may be assigned duties such as opening and sorting mail; photocopying materials; wrapping and packaging library materials; forwarding and mailing library loan requests; and filing and shredding records.


Job Responsibilities:


  • Assists with the flow and organization of Library materials. Sorts, files, shelves and routes books and a wide variety of other materials; transports books and materials using book carts, hand trucks and similar equipment; locates or retrieves materials for processing using automated systems; maintains the order and appearance of library materials, re-shelving as needed; locates and retrieves materials for patrons and other Library staff.

  • Assists patrons and other staff members. Locates and retrieves materials at staff and patron request. Assists patrons and staff with locating materials throughout the Library.

  • Maintains proper order and appearance of shelf materials. Maintains the order and appearance of library materials, and re-shelves as needed.

  • Other duties include. May help with repairing damaged book bindings and other materials, work on special projects as part of a team, and assist with arranging and maintaining library equipment, as needed.


Qualifications:


High school diploma or GED


Customer Service Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience providing customer service to the general public.


Written and Verbal Communication Skills: Candidates must be able to effectively respond to patron communications, in person, and respond to patron requests for directional assistance. Candidates must be able to effectively communicate in English, verbally and in writing, as well as comprehend spoken and written English.


Organizational Skills: Candidates must have experience sorting books or other materials alphabetically and numerically, quickly, accurately and safely, and must be able to learn sorting and Library filing schemes such as the Dewey Decimal system.


Experience using Personal Computers: Candidates must have basic experience with computer operations and software; including experience using menu-based commands and staff terminals to obtain, interpret, and display inventory data and information. Candidates with experience using internet browsers, online catalogs and e-mail programs (such as Microsoft Outlook) are preferred.


Other Required Skills and Abilities: Candidates must be flexible in adjusting work hours and locations. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to work with others as part of a team on projects and have the ability to understand and apply verbal and written instructions. Candidates must also be able to bend, stretch, stoop, and lift bins up to 40 lbs in weight and push wheeled book carts weighing up to 200 lbs. Candidates must also have the ability to squeeze and release hand brakes on wheeled book carts.


Desirable:


  • Candidates with fluency in a language other than English (particularly Spanish, Asian languages, African languages or American Sign Language) are encouraged to apply

  • Candidates with shipping and receiving experience are desired.

  • Candidates with merchandise handling and inventory tracking experience are desired.
