Winrock International is seeking a Senior Director, Civil Society & Education. The Senior Director’s key responsibilities include leading the strategic direction and growth of CSE’s technical portfolio; coaching and mentoring CSE staff; ensuring successful financial performance of the group; and meeting new business targets, revenue and indirect cost projections, as well as project implementation agreements. In addition, important and key to this position is introducing WI to new donors and expanding the US portfolio.

position Summary:


Winrock International is currently seeking a visionary leader who can sustain the growth pattern of a successful program portfolio and direct a dynamic experienced team. The Senior Director will lead the Civil Society and Education (CSE) Group, one of four technical groups at Winrock. CSE programs focus on crucial aspects of human and institutional capacity development: empowering individuals, especially women and youth, to transform their lives, institutions and communities. CSE is organized into three units: two international units—Education & Empowerment and Civic Engagement & Social Equity—an existing portfolio within the US unit, US Civil Society and Economic Development. With a staff of approximately 200 professionals within the US and worldwide and annual revenue of approximately $28 million, CSE implements projects including youth employment, livelihoods, and enterprise development; gender equality; prevention and mitigation of child labor, trafficking in persons, forced labor, domestic violence, and other violations of human rights, formal and non-formal education, and institutional capacity strengthening and civic engagement. This US Program Unit, focuses on economic and community development, specifically capacity building programs for small non-profits, and local governments, a strong program that mentors start-up companies, works the company through the commercialization process and organizes investor groups for early stage investments, in addition, small business development technical assistance, and training, and workforce development.


The Senior Director’s key responsibilities include leading the strategic direction and growth of CSE’s technical portfolio; coaching and mentoring CSE staff; ensuring successful financial performance of the group; and meeting new business targets, revenue and indirect cost projections, as well as project implementation agreements. In addition, important and key to this position is introducing WI to new donors and expanding the US portfolio.


ESSENTIAL Responsibilities:


  • Direct Winrock’s long-term strategic planning for programs in Civil Society and Education.

  • Develop a diverse and sustainable revenue stream by building on Winrock’s unique position among international development organizations in that we are truly global, with programing here in the US as well as abroad.

  • Assure timely, results-oriented, and successful implementation of all Winrock programs and activities under purview of the Civil Society & Education business group.

  • Oversee the management of the entire portfolio of projects in the US and globally.

  • Ensure group maintains relationships with current and potential funders and partners, while bringing new donors and partners to Winrock to ensure expansion into new geographic areas.

  • Provide leadership in identifying, developing, tracking and securing new business in related areas and expansion of our US based portfolio.

  • Ensure group leverages financial resources of stakeholders including government cost sharing, bilateral donors, private sector and other non-traditional partners.

  • Oversee the development of targeted marketing and collateral materials, in collaboration with Program, New Business Services and Communications teams.

  • In collaboration with Winrock colleagues strengthen and develop new relationships with key clients, organizations, associations and corporate partners to support the development of Civil Society and Education programs.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Coordinate with other Winrock units and groups on strategic planning and developing new business opportunities for country specific programs.

  • Represent Winrock in all strategic and program matters related to programs in the group’s portfolio.

  • Ensure Winrock is represented at key internal or external events relevant to technical area.

  • Ensure group’s appropriate and timely utilization of in-house technical support to the field.

  • Prepare the group’s annual internal budget.

  • Oversee and participate in regular field monitoring and evaluation and revisions/modifications of the field programs.

  • Support program development activities by providing best practices from ongoing programs.

  • Work closely with the technical team to integrate effective Winrock practices and methodologies.

  • Proactively identify and promote public outreach and representation opportunities and serve as a representative at such opportunities.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND:


Education: Minimum advanced degree in related area preferred.


Experience: Minimum 15 years relevant experience in a similar position including strategic planning, project development, project implementation and administration and staff management. International experience which could include but not limited to private sector companies, and government contacts around the world is preferred. An understanding of protocol, and cultural issues related to representing a major development organization. Experience marketing and managing implementation of related services is required.


Demonstrated intellectual leadership in the pursuit of innovative solutions.


Skills: Skilled at securing new business including leading outreach to existing and new business clients; generating, qualifying and establishing new business leads; and, seeking and securing new business opportunities.


Ability to manage and motivate a diverse global staff and successfully implement and expand a worldwide portfolio of large and complex programs in education, civil society strengthening, gender equality, protection of rights, and employment and livelihoods development.


Experience in leading major community and economic development programs, preferably with experience in the US and abroad.


Strong business skills and experience including: basic accounting, business planning, budgeting, and achieving tangible financial results are required; proven ability to manage discretionary financial resources in a cost-effective manner.


Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English required; capability in one other language is preferred; demonstrated ability to interact effectively and sensitively with a broad cross-section of internal staff and external donors and collaborators is essential.


Excellent analytical skills, including ability to understand concepts and issues and present them clearly; ability to exercise sound judgment; demonstrated strong organizational skills, including management of multiple tasks and conflict resolution.


Effective “hands-on” user of Microsoft Office software (especially Outlook, Word, and Excel).


Well-tested and strong interpersonal, team building, financial management and budgeting skills are essential.


Other:Established networks with relevant organizations, associations and clients desired.


Must be available for periodic domestic and international travel.
