About The Port Authority
The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey is a bi-state public agency responsible for promoting transportation and commerce, operating some of the busiest and most important transportation links in the region including bridges, tunnels, bus terminals, airports, PATH, AirTrain systems, and the NY/NJ seaport.
The Aviation Department operates the agency’s five airports (John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Teterboro (TEB), and Stewart International Airport (SWF). JFK International, Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia airports are all large hub commercial airports. Together, these five airports form one of the world’s premiere air transportation systems.
Responsibilities
The Airport Operations Agent (AOA) identifies aircraft, directs itinerant aircraft to parking positions, transports passengers to the terminals, and secures aircraft. As participants in the bird control programs, AOAs make sweeps of the runways and taxiways to disperse birds. AOAs are also responsible for monitoring the facility for FAR 139 related issues and reporting violations, irregularities, or hazardous conditions. AOAs help to maintain FAR 139 compliance at the worksite by monitoring escorts, cone-line and barrier placement, FOD control procedures, and runway-taxiway safety area protection. AOAs are responsible for ensuring haul-route requirements, worksite boundaries and adequate security guard staffing. AOAs need to maintain two-way communication with the Air Traffic Control Tower, the Airport Duty Manager and the Resident Engineer. AOAs are responsible for the protection of all active NAVAID critical areas during IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) conditions. They also have responsibilities in the areas of safety, security, rescue/emergency situations, and snow removal. AOAs can be assigned to any of the following Port Authority facilities: John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport.
The AOA position requires working under the following conditions:
- Exposure to hazards of emergency work
- AOAs work rotating shifts including holidays and weekends
- Exposure to all types of weather conditions
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must present the following qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Aeronautical Operations; no work experience is required.
- Candidates who do not possess a Bachelors degree must have a minimum of a High
School Diploma AND at least 1 year of field operations or aeronautical operations
experience.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will present the following qualification profile:
- Knowledge of airport terminal, landside, and aeronautical operations
- Knowledge of and ability to apply the standards of FAR Part 139
- Ability to obtain a Police Department Shotgun Permit upon appointment to the position
- Knowledge of Air Traffic Control (ATC) procedures and instructions
- Ability to communicate clearly
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports
- Ability to interact with all airport tenants, guests and employees in a courteous and
professional manner
Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam that is designed to measure the applicant’s knowledge in areas such as: airport and aircraft terminology and operations; airport signage and runway markings; weather reporting; radio operation; traffic control; general FAR emergency procedures; and aircraft identifications.
Successful written-test candidates will be invited to participate in an oral evaluation. The oral evaluation will measure candidates’ knowledge and abilities in Aviation Operations, Situational Judgment, Problem Sensitivity, Flexibility, Decision Making, Customer Service, and Oral Communication.
Selected candidates will be subject to a comprehensive background check and must pass a fingerprint-based Criminal History Record Check as mandated by 49 CFR 1542 to obtain and maintain an airport Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Card with Airfield Movement Area Driving Privileges.
Compensation & Benefits
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package (subject to collective bargaining agreement) and a professional environment that supports development and recognizes achievement.
Starting salary: $16.01 hourly (subject to collective bargaining agreement).
