About the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience
The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (the Coalition) is a rapidly growing nonprofit network of museums, historic sites, organizations and individuals dedicated to creating a more peaceful future through remembering past struggles and addressing their contemporary legacies. Founded in 1999 by a group of nine pioneering heritage and human rights leaders on four continents, the Coalition has grown to more than 200 members in 55 countries, working in regional and thematic networks in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Russia, North America and in the Middle East and North Africa. Each year, more than 20 million people visit Sites of Conscience across the globe to participate in programs that promote civic action by connecting history and memory with contemporary human rights, social justice and transitional justice issues.
Position Description
The Coalition is seeking a Communications Manager, a new position, to lead all aspects of the Coalition’s communications efforts, including marketing, public relations and advocacy. As a member of the senior leadership team, the Communications Manager is integral to shaping the strategic direction of the organization. The Communications Manager is based in the Coalition’s New York City office and is responsible for raising the profile of the Coalition among key audiences, including its members and others defined in collaboration with the Executive Director and the Board, by developing, implementing, and managing a short- and long-range communications plan to reach and sustain core audiences essential to the growth of the Coalition. S/he reports to the Executive Director and is supported by a Communications and Operations Associate and consultants as needed.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement the Coalition’s overall communications plan to meet the twin goals of raising the visibility of the Coalition among external audiences and enhancing communications among its internal audience of members.
- Work closely with the Director of Development to ensure communications messages complement and enhance fundraising efforts
- Create and manage the Coalition’s budget for all aspects of communications
- Stay abreast of new developments in technology and communications to ensure the Coalition remains cutting-edge
- Manage Communications and Operations Associate; hire and manage consultants as necessary
Branding & Marketing
- Implement a standardized brand across the organization, including in all online and printed materials (website, social media, marketing and press materials, program guides, annual reports, newsletters, class/training curricula for academic partnerships, etc.)
- Develop new marketing materials in a variety of formats including videos, presentations, publications, podcasts, etc.
- Ensure all presentations by Coalition staff members and representatives meet branding, style and content standards
Online Communications
- Oversee the updating of the Coalition’s website, including integration of social media and cutting edge audience engagement elements
- Oversee the expansion of the Coalition’s online presence including the development of micro-sites as needed
- Oversee the implementation of the Coalition’s social media presence on key platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.
Press Outreach
- Cultivate members of the press internationally with the goal of regularly placing stories, Op-Eds, and/or mentions in press on the SoC movement as well as individual sites
- Work with Communications and Operations Associate to create standardized press materials including writing talking points, etc.
- Design and implement appropriate events to garner press coverage
External Relations and Advocacy
- Identify key spaces such as the United Nations, I-NGO and international human rights networks where the Coalition should be visible as a leader
- Build long-term relationships with identified organizations, networks and groups
- Represent the Coalition at appropriate venues including conferences and events and act as spokesperson for the Coalition as necessary
- Work with Programs team to develop and implement strategic “advocacy missions” that respond to the needs of members and leverage the Coalition’s expertise for programmatic initiatives
- With the Executive Director, work with Board and Ambassadors Circle members to create a committee to lead the Coalition’s advocacy efforts and guide the external relations strategy
- Establish and manage speakers’ bureau made up of leaders from within the Coalition; establish standards that ensure clear and consistent messaging in their presentations
- Other Tasks as Determined with the Executive Director
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Web Design or related field.
- 4-5 years’ experience in nonprofit communications, with experience at a human rights organization strongly preferred
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills
- Working knowledge of social media technology and proven judgment in distributing content
- Outstanding time and project management skills
- Basic knowledge of HTML /coding/ website CMS (Word Press)
- Skill in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign or other software
- Knowledge of Spanish, Russian or French a strong plus
- Creativity, resourcefulness and ability to work independently
