United States of America: Grants Accountant

Position Summary


The Grants Accountant will perform post-award administration, management, and financial reporting for multiple grants, sub-grants, and contracts, ensuring strict compliance with donor, Freedom House, and regulatory requirements. This position is based in Washington DC and reports to the Grants Manager.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Ensure all grants, contracts, and subgrants are expended in compliance with funder requirements and Freedom House policies and procedures

  • Participate in reviewing, negotiating, and modifying grants and contracts in line with Freedom House guidelines

  • Provide financial evaluation of program expenses including variance and advise program managers accordingly

  • Prepare financial status reports, review and analyze trends, costs, financial commitments, and obligations incurred

  • Review contracts for compliance, and guide and train staff on contracts management

  • Generate journal entries and reports, and verify postings against invoice/supporting documentation

  • Prepare financial reports, reimbursement requests, and draw-down of funds in strict adherence with funder requirements

  • Reconcile accounts, closeout grants, and maintain accurate and complete grant related records

  • Serve as the point of contact for assigned grants and subgrants including compliance related inquiries

  • Assist supervisor in streamlining processes, and in developing best practice procedures

  • Draft finance guidelines, policies and procedures on grants, subgrants, and contract administration

  • Monitor applicable federal regulations for changes and updates to grants

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business with emphasis in finance

  • Two to four years grants management, auditing, or finance, with emphasis in grant accounting

  • Two years of experience in international non-profit finance or accounting

  • Two years of experience in USG grants administration

  • Experience using accounting software

  • Working knowledge of U.S. federal regulations for awards specifically OMB A-110, OMB A-122, 22 CFR 226, 22 CFR 228, 22 CFR145, and 2 CFR 200

  • Ability to apply GAAP, and work within strict guidelines and procedures

  • Expert knowledge of general ledger, transaction analysis, budgeting, and account reconciliation

  • Knowledge of grants administration, and ability to interpret grants-related governmental documents and accurately respond to them

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing

  • Ability to apply superb attention to detail and consistently produce timely and error-free work

  • Strong ability to plan, organize, prioritize work, and multi task under pressure to meet tight deadlines

  • Ability to successfully work with diverse groups with limited or no understanding of finance

  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills, excellent judgment in problem solving and decision making

  • Leadership experience preferred
