Seasonal fish hatchery wage position, assigned primarily to the King and Queen Fish Hatchery from March through October, will report to Hatchery Superintendent. Responsible for assisting in all phases of warm water hatchery operations including: the collection, culture, transport, and distribution of all life stages of fish; maintain and monitor rearing units using a variety of equipment; feed and sample fish; collect data and maintain records; assist with maintenance of grounds, building and equipment; contact with vendors to arrange for procurement of materials, performance of semi-skilled trades functions; and other general labor as needed. Position may involve shifts, including weekend and/or evening work.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicant must possess the ability to perform manual labor, including moderate to heavy lifting in and around water in various climatic conditions. Position requires the ability to interact effectively with co-workers, supervisors, supply vendors, and the public. Hire must obtain certification in the “Boating Basics” safety course. Must be reliable, willing to work during the week, and work on weekends if schedule permits.
A valid Virginia driver’s license is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Training or experience in aquaculture and/or husbandry of animals or plants desired. Experience with; small watercraft, agricultural, and vehicular operation and maintenance, is preferred, as are trade skills. Knowledge of biology, and office functions, is desirable.
