Phlebotomy / Customer Service Position

Works collaboratively with all areas to ensure accuracy and completeness of procedures. Schedules patients and maintains data base of scheduled procedures.


Maintains proficiency in both the Hospital ADT system and the Laboratory registration system. Keeps current with insurance updates and software changes in both systems. Receives and places orders for laboratory services. Retrieves laboratory results from hospital wide EMR for physicians and patients.


Obtains demographic information from patients or from the laboratory requisition. Enters accurate information into the appropriate Rex Healthcare information systems. Completes all federal and regulatory forms required for the registration process, including obtaining signed consents and financial agreements. Orders laboratory tests directly into the electronic medical record.


Registers outreach specimens by sorting courier drop offs, registering specimens, ordering laboratory tests, and accurately labeling specimens. Follows proper protocol to ensure the integrity of laboratory specimens.


Performs specimen collection by venipuncture as required following documented policies and procedures.


Performs specimen collection by micro-collection procedure as required following documented policies and procedures.


Performs specimen collection for culture as required following documented policies and procedures.


Maintains positive specimen identification throughout the specimen collection process.


Verifies specimen requirements and appropriate collection procedures prior to specimen collection.


Collects urine and blood alcohol specimens in compliance with documented chain of custody procedures. Assures appropriate forms are utilized with complete and accurate information and documentation.


Provides instruction for patients and customers regarding appropriate specimen collection as required following documented policies and procedures.


Demonstrates appropriate Customer Service skills when answering department telephones, taking and giving messages, transferring calls as needed, and reporting laboratory results verbally and/or by fax.


Assembles work area supplies according to requirements for specified tests or procedures. Restocks work area as needed or as required.


Job Qualifications:


HS or GED plus one year of related experience or training required. College degree preferred. Prefer experience in healthcare setting with exposure to patient registration or scheduling or insurance authorization processes. Requires exceptional customer service and organizational skills. Medical terminology desired.
