BACKGROUND:The International Trachoma Initiative (ITI) facilitates access to Pfizer, Inc.’s Zithromax® donation as part of implementing the WHO-endorsed SAFE strategy to eliminate blinding trachoma as a public health problem by 2020 (GET2020). ITI works closely with Ministry of Health officials in countries where trachoma is endemic to develop and carry out cogent plans for SAFE strategy implementation and to ensure in-country capacity for forecasting, receiving, and distributing Zithromax® to target populations. ITI also collaborates extensively with international and national NGOs in the sectors of eye health care, water and sanitation, and neglected tropical diseases for integrated support to SAFE strategy implementation. To achieve global trachoma elimination, and guided by the global roadmap 2020 INSight, ITI and its partners are actively supporting a significant scale-up of the program over the next three to five years.
The International Coalition for Trachoma Control (ICTC) is a coalition of International Non-Governmental Development Organizations, training institutions, researchers, academics, and industry supporters with scientific, programmatic, and field-based expertise in tackling trachoma. ITI is an active partner and sup-porter of the ICTC.
Feeling the urgency of the 2020 target, ICTC has grown in just a few short years from a small group of committed organizations into a large and diverse coalition of 44 member organizations that collaborate on game-changing initiatives with governments, health authorities, and trachoma-endemic communities.
ICTC working groups support both the technical and programmatic quality of SAFE implementation pro-grams and ICTC’s strategic plan. The working group approach aims to utilize ICTC members’ collective expertise and resources and is the principal ICTC ‘structure’ to enable the development/dissemination of preferred practices to operationalize WHO guidelines for SAFE implementation and effective scale up to achieve GET2020.
