Job Summary
The Director, Foundation & Public Partnerships is a member of the US National Office (USNO) Development Team. Based in New York City, the Director will bring an entrepreneurial spirit and international experience to lead the organization in building its institutional donor revenue stream by cultivating and securing US-based foundation and public (US government) sector funding. The position reports to the Chief Development Officer and will coordinate closely with other members of the Development Team, as well with Right To Play’s domestic program (Play at the Core) team and the International Program team. The position takes the lead to identify, cultivate, manage and support the submission and awarding of proposals from foundations and public institutions within the US. To a lesser extent, the Director will also identify, pursue and oversee partnerships with international NGOs based in the United States, when pursuing joint proposals and program implementation consortiums.
The Director, Foundation & Public Partnerships will identify, research, qualify, track, manage, and steward key donor agencies and associated funding opportunities. The Director will lead and manage the development and submission of proposals and support relevant administrative tasks associated with the awarding of grants.
As a member of the USNO Development Team, the Director will support processes and initiatives that contribute to the USNO’s fundraising goals, including supporting certain fundraising activities that may not be specifically related to foundations or public sources, if deemed appropriate. Together with other members of the USNO team, the Director will also play a critical role in helping to shape the strategies, systems, and tools that support the USNO and its fundraising efforts at large.
Primary Responsibilities
Job Responsibility #1: Donor and Opportunity Prospecting and Qualification
· Conduct ongoing research to establish and maintain a growing prospect list of current or potential family foundations (1st priority) and public setor funding opportunities (2nd priority), whose interests are aligned with Right To Play’s programs (with a focus on both Right To Play’s International Programs – 1st priority, and the organization’s domestic program – 2nd priority)
· Liaise with other Right To Play team members to conduct relationship mapping to assess if any relationships exist between Right To Play and potential donors
· Conduct in-depth analysis into prospective donors, including initial communications with donors, to establish whether there is sufficient alignment to warrant formally submitting requests for funding
Job Responsibility # 2: Relationship Management and Donor Stewardship
·Establish, build and foster relationships with:
o foundation contacts (majority of time);
o government funding contacts (NY City, NY State, USAID, and Department of State); and
o major implementing INGOs in the US
· Lead in the stewardship, cultivation and follow-up with potential and existing donors under the above listed categories to raise Right To Play’s profile and create strong opportunities for new and continued funding. This includes initial communications with donors, discussions during proposal development, follow-up after submission, and maintenance of the relationship should a grant or gift be awarded/given (e.g. submission of program reports and updates)
· Liaise with the Play at the Core and International Program Operations teams to ensure the on-time submission of high-quality reports that meet all donor requirements
· Serve as the focal point for communication and reporting of program results to donors against awarded grants
Job Responsibility #3: Proposal Development and Pipeline Growth
· Lead proposal development processes for prioritized funding opportunities, facilitating participation by key team members around the world (if necessary) to produce winning proposal submissions
· Meet or exceed funding targets for foundations and public donors in the United States
· Grow a strong multi-year pipeline of foundation and public sector funding
Job Responsibility #4: Fundraising Strategy and Information Management
· Establish a high level of institutional knowledge on the foundation and public funding environment
· Develop systems and processes to support grant development within the USNO
· In consultation with the Chief Development Officer, set and track funding targets for foundation and public donors in the US, in line with Institutional Partnerships and agency-wide fundraising strategies
· Manage and oversee the timely entering of relevant contact, organization, opportunity, and award information within the Right To Play CRM/STADIUM information management system
· Ensure the efficient and effective storage and management of fundraising and proposal information
· Develop and implement new strategies to identify foundations and public funding prospects
· Communicate and coordinate with the USNO and Institutional Partnerships team on foundation and public fundraising priorities, opportunities and the funding environment in the US
Qualifications
Education/Training/Certification
Required (must have):
· Undergraduate / Bachelor’s Degree
Desired (asset):
· Advanced University Degree in International Development or similar preferred
Experience
Required (must have):
· 5 years’ experience working proposal development and fundraising.
Desired (asset):
· Progressively responsible experience in raising revenue for the international aid/development sector, including at a senior level
Competencies/Personal Attributes
Required (must have):
· Highly organized and able to manage timelines involving multiple inputs under tight deadlines
· Exceptional critical thinking, problem-solving, operational, and organizational skills
· Strong communication and presentation skills and ability to develop relationships with donors
· Self-starter, and able to achieve results working independently
· Willingness to travel domestically and internationally
· Ability to lead, coordinate and facilitate projects and planning processes and establish short and long-term goals
Knowledge & Technical Skills
Required (must have):
- Strong knowledge of program design and budgeting
- Excellent writing, editing, and research skills
- Computer literacy in Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
Desired (asset):
- Knowledge of developing logical frameworks and M&E plans
- Knowledge of US Government Funding Mechanisms
- Knowledge in Microsoft Dynamics CRM is an asset
