US INTERNSHIP SCOPE OF WORK


INTERN TITLE: US (Seattle/US Remote) – MCNW Resource Development Intern


INTERNSHIP WORKSITE LOCATION: Seattle, WA (intern can work remotely within the US)


DATES OF INTERNSHIP: November 2015 – May 2016


LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: 6 months, 10 hours/week, (flexible schedule)


FUNDING FOR THE INTERNSHIP: This is an unpaid internship


BACKGROUND: Established in 1998, Mercy Corps Northwest (MCNW) is the U.S. economic development field office of Mercy Corps, the Portland-based international relief and development agency. MCNW is formally incorporated as a nonprofit and designated Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). MCNW works throughout Oregon and Washington with offices in Portland and Seattle. MCNW’s mission provides a domestic context to the parallel mission of Mercy Corps, which is to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities. Our core program areas include: providing access to capital in the form of microloans, matched savings grants and business training.


PROJECT DESCRIPTION:


MCNW is offering an internship opportunity to a qualified individual to assist with researching and preparation of grant proposals and donor engagement in our Seattle office.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


  • Conducting research on local banks, agencies, corporations and foundations to identify prospective sponsors for the microloan and entrepreneurship training programs.

  • Research and Identify prospective donors/grantors that align with the MCNW mission.

  • Draft grant & partnership proposals with input and guidance from management.

Participate in weekly check-in meetings with MCNW staff in Seattle. This can be done via phone, video conference or in person.


DELIVERABLES:


  • Report summarizing research findings and recommendations for potential donors/sponsors to engage.

  • Grant proposal(s) in draft or final form depending on timing and capacity

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS


  • Commitment to economic & community development through access to capital, training & education services.

  • Prior grant-writing and/or resource development experience

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Excellent written communication and research skills

  • Willingness to be flexible

LIVING CONDITIONS: This internship is located in US – Seattle, WA. No living accommodations are provided for this internship.
