Museum Assistant - City of Las Cruces, NM - Las Cruces, NM

Provides customer service and assists with various support functions including the development of media, marketing, advertising, programs, and exhibits to effectively support and promote activities and events for the museums.

Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, frequent work beyond normal business hours, including working evening/weekend hours and special events upon request, and responding to customer issues. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.


Work is performed in a standard office environment and museum facilities. Medium physical demands which are varied in nature and may include frequent or prolonged periods of standing, sitting, bending, stooping, reaching; use of step stools, ladders, hand and power tools; working at varied heights, pushing and pulling shipping/packing crates, carrying materials, supplies, art work, and artifacts weighing up to fifty (50) pounds in setting up and tearing down exhibits and preparing items for storage and shipping. Frequent exposure to disagreeable chemicals and fumes common to preparation and maintenance of exhibits and displays. Frequent use of a personal computer.


FIRST CONSIDERATION MAY BE GIVEN TO CURRENT CITY OF LAS CRUCES EMPLOYEES WHO MEET THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS.


This posting will be used to fill a part-time, regular, non-exempt position in the Museum – Education section of the Community and Cultural Services Department but may be used to fill other vacancies as needed.


Duties and Responsibilities:


· Monitors and maintains cleanliness of assigned facility and provides prompt and accurate assistance and information to museum visitors to maintain a welcoming atmosphere at all times; enforces museum policies and procedures to ensure visitor safety and facility security.


· Provides administrative support which includes conducting research, compiling information, and preparing, reviewing, and editing draft documents and communications to provide accurate, clear, and concise information; produces and distributes informational and promotional materials, graphic designs, and press releases to meet deadlines and promote activities and events.


· Provides information which may require the interpretation of policies and procedures; refers inquiries to the appropriate person; provides assistance and information regarding departmental/City policies, procedures and other program details to visitors, the general public and employees; refers matters outside scope of authority to supervisor for resolution.


· Updates, generates, distributes, and coordinates calendars and related notifications; schedules classes, meetings, and coordinates use of facilities; mixes glazes, paints, prepares clay, repairs, loads and fires kilns, maintains facility equipment to assist with general exhibit fabrication, repair, and museum maintenance to provide appropriate levels of program support, assistance, and coordination.


· Researches and compiles a variety of information related to special projects, inquiries, customer service issues, and department functions to prepare and present various special and recurring reports; maintains program records, databases, and files to ensure compliance and meet performance targets; tracks artist submissions and exhibit information to maintain accurate records.


· May provide visitor tours, manage and develop content for social media, and update various social media platforms; coordinates the development and distribution of information utilizing a variety venues and mediums and responds to inquiries to ensure effective, consistent, accurate, and timely communication.


Minimum Qualifications:


College credit hours equivalent to an Associate’s degree, designated or undesignated, in Communication, Graphics, Marketing, Fine Arts, Business or Public Administration or related field AND one (1) year of related experience in a administrative support, customer service, or graphic arts. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.


Valid driver’s license may be required or preferred. If applicable, position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are desirable.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Basic Knowledge of: principles, practices, and techniques of effective journalism, mass communications, media, marketing, advertising, public relations, and customer service; ethical codes and accountability standards to ensure good stewardship of assets held in the public trust and to maintain public confidence; current methods and standards for preparing effective business correspondence and writing and editing techniques; correct English usage, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; business and personal computers, social media, and specialized software applications; safe use of basic hand tools and power tools; occupational hazards and standard safety practices; City organization, operations, policies and procedures to effectively perform the duties and responsibilities required of the assignment.


Ability to: assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands; communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, and use interpersonal skills to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive work direction; coordinate multiple assignments and meet critical deadlines and provide timely and effective customer service; generate new and creative ideas for marketing, advertising, and relevant web content; determine the best source and presentation of information; write and edit material; establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and the public to achieve established goals and objectives.


Skills in: communicating effectively and preparing and presenting information for diverse audiences; operating a personal computer with installed generic and specialized software; the use and care of the hand and power tools and equipment used in museum exhibit preparation, installation, repair, and maintenance; analyzing issues, evaluating alternatives, and making logical recommendations based on findings to address needs and develop programs, plans, and strategies; using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines to perform highly effective support in assigned areas.
