United States of America: Communications Manager


ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION: Our mission is to improve protection for civilians caught in conflicts around the world. We call on and advise international organizations, governments, militaries, and armed non-state actors to adopt and implement policies to prevent civilian harm. When civilians are harmed we advocate for the provision of amends and post-harm assistance. We bring the voices of civilians themselves to those making decisions affecting their lives.


POSITION DESCRIPTION: CIVIC seeks a communications manager to develop and execute the organization’s external communications and media efforts. A significant portion of our vision plan for 2016 – 2018 is focused on advancing our field of work, and the communications manager—with our program staff—will play a major role. He/she will create and execute an innovative strategy to quickly grow CIVIC’s public engagement including with media, academia, and other stakeholders globally. The position is full-time and reports to the managing director.


POSITION LOCATION: Washington, DC


COMMUNICATIONS:


  • Ensure all CIVIC reports, briefs, advocacy/outreach presentations, and fundraising/marketing materials are of the highest quality;

  • Amplify CIVIC’s voice, ideas, and issues in the media;

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with journalists who cover our issues;

  • Establish best practices and manage social media outreach;

  • Work with program staff to identify opportunities and craft innovative media pitches to increase coverage of our work and our issue;

  • Manage our organizational voice by assisting staff in writing and editing of materials;

  • Draft and manage the publishing of our annual report;

  • Work closely with and support the development of the executive director in his role as the principal voice of the organization;

  • Work closely with the development team to craft engaging materials for our donors;

  • Oversee regular updating and maintenance of our website and social media;

  • Create outreach, media, marketing and branding materials to deliver a clear and consistent message about our work and our issue.

STRATEGY & MANAGEMENT:


  • Create and implement a three-year strategic plan for CIVIC’s communication endeavors;

  • Execute strategic plan including liaising with program staff to cultivate ideas;

  • Evaluate performance by developing clear metrics of impact and track these results over time to ensure we are reaching our objectives;

  • Develop and manage communications department budget in collaboration with the managing director;

  • Manage communications interns and consultants.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Demonstrated commitment to CIVIC’s mission and program;

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in communications for nonprofit organizations – preferably with internationally focused organizations that work in the field of policy development and advocacy.

  • A bachelor’s degree or educational equivalent required.

  • Fluency with Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Superlative writing skills, with demonstrated ability to write in a clear, structured, and persuasive manner and to adjust the tone and format of written materials to target audiences.

  • Familiarity with Expression Engine and knowledge of basic HTML strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of SEO and best practices.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and an ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to think strategically and to work well in occasionally high-stress conditions.

  • Excellent time and project management skills with a results-driven approach and strong attention to detail, as well as excellent organizational and administrative skills.

  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently (a self-starter), as well to function successfully as a member of a team.

  • Willingness and flexibility to travel domestically and internationally if needed.

  • A sense of humor.

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with experience
