Description:


FHI 360’s Social and Economic Development (SED) Business Unit encompasses a diverse collection of programs and expertise, comprising broad, cross-cutting development sectors. SED’s work includes the technical areas of civil society and peacebuilding, workforce development and entrepreneurship, youth, livelihoods and economic strengthening, climate, gender, and technology.


We seek a senior-level Deputy Director for our portfolio of programs within workforce development and entrepreneurship, youth, livelihoods and economic strengthening, and ICT for Development. Based in Washington, DC with some travel to FHI 360 focus countries, the Deputy Director will have technical expertise in one or more of the technical areas included in this portfolio of programs who can provide vision and leadership to enhance FHI 360’s technical expertise and thought leadership, strengthen our portfolio through business development efforts, and assure quality technical assistance from staff to projects and programs in FHI 360 country offices.


Job Summary / Responsibilities:


Business Development


In partnership with SED’s Director and the SED Director of Business Development, the Deputy Director will work closely with the technical directors under his/her supervision to manage their business plans, track identified opportunities in capture, manage business development budgets, identify and prioritize opportunities that address significant development challenges and correspond with SED technical areas, identify project partners that complete FHI 360 capabilities, and support the business development process. S/he will work closely with SED leadership to identify focus areas and strategically deploy SED resources across the FHI 360 platforms. The Deputy Director will support the cultivation of a network of partners, consultants, and donors that are relevant for SED’s sectors. S/he will lead and/or support proposal development and work with technical teams to develop innovative and responsive programs and assist with other proposal development activities like recruitment and management plans as needed.


Technical Leadership


With support from SED technical directors and staff, the Director will support thought leadership in SED’s relevant sectors through thought leadership and learning events, publications, and oversee special FHI 360 initiatives. S/he is responsible for technical quality of program implementation for SED sector programs, and will work with SED sector leads to ensure appropriate technical and operational staffing bandwidth to achieve this. The Deputy Director will also provide senior level technical support on selected projects including problem solving and technical guidance.


Management


The Deputy Director is responsible for management oversight of the technical directors within his/her portfolio and the projects and programs. This includes monitoring financial pipelines and implementation timelines, addressing operational barriers to program implementation, liaising with enterprise staff partner to resolve operational challenges, and client management. S/he will mentor staff and support professional development of SED staff. The Deputy Director is also responsible for coordinating and chairing the SED monthly staff meetings, coordinating internal and external communication, and attending FHI 360 corporate governance meetings for SED.


Qualifications:


  • 17+ years of relevant professional experience and a bachelor’s degree, or 15 years of experience and a master’s degree.

  • 10+ years of relevant professional experience working for international development implementing partner/USAID contractor.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with multi-sectoral and integrated teams, and lead, develop and implement business plans.

  • Experience overseeing staff, budget, strategic planning and managing detailed program implementation in a complex, collaborative and changing environment.

  • Very strong leadership and management competencies including the ability to bring people along with a stated vision and strategy, and capacity to communicate effectively with country and regional office leadership, technical peers, and colleagues in business development, strategy, communications, and enterprise services.

  • Thorough understanding of the program life cycle for SED sectors from the implementing partner perspective.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse team of technical experts and technical portfolio.

  • Demonstrated ability to convene and lead thought leadership opportunities.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to travel up to 20% time.

  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
