POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Director will oversee and manage 1) the donation of Mectizan on behalf of Merck & Co., Inc. for the elimination of onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis (LF) and 2) the donation of albendazole on behalf of GlasxoSmithKline for co-administration with Mectizan for the elimination of LF in countries where onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis co-exist.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:**
· Responsible for strategic planning and daily operations of Mectizan Donation Program activities in support of efforts to eliminate onchocerciasis and LF.
· Responsible for budget development and financial management of Mectizan Donation Program.
· Provide technical and policy advice to sponsoring organization regarding program activities and institutional relationships with international partners.
· Oversee Mectizan Expert Committee (MEC) secretariat and organize bi-annual MEC meetings.
· Collaborate with UN agencies including WHO, World Bank, UNICEF, NGO’s, and Ministries of Health in endemic countries in all aspects of onchocerciasis and LF elimination programs.
· Supervise the MDP team, currently composed of one Associate Director, a Program Coordinator, an Administrative Assistant, and consultants as needed.
· Supervise the production of annual newsletter and technical and promotional documentation.
· Visit countries where onchocerciasis and LF are endemic to review established elimination programs, evaluate current level of achievements including post-treatment surveillance, stimulate enhanced engagement, etc.
· Represent the Mectizan Donation Program at meetings and conferences related to onchocerciasis and LF.
· Coordinate with Merck’s research teams to review selected study protocols involving Mectizan.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
· Participate fully as a member of the Task Force for Global Health leadership team by contributing, assisting and participating in ongoing Task Force meetings and initiatives, including but not limited to annual planning and budgeting, the Executive Committee for Business Management and such other duties as agreed with the President and CEO.
TRAVEL: 20% – 30% (domestic and international travel) required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· MD with experience in tropical medicine, public health or preventive medicine
· Five years field experience working in health programs in Africa
· Ten years direct program management experience working with an international and/or non-governmental organization
· Five years management experience
· Direct experience working with onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis
· Proficiency in English and French
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills
· Proven organizational and management skills
· Computer skills sufficient to oversee development and operation of computer-based program monitoring and disease surveillance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Master’s degree in public health or related clinical specialty
