The Senior Communications Specialist (Internal Title: Senior Communications Specialist 1) will contribute to the development and expansion of an RTI-wide strategic initiative in food security and agriculture, with a goal to expand RTI’s portfolio domestically and internationally.
The successful candidate will sit within the International Development Group (IDG) and develop a marketing and communications plan for the strategic initiative with the Food Security and Agriculture team. This will involve working collaboratively across the Institute to develop effective and creative messaging and marketing materials, as well as designing and implementing effective communications events.
This position will be based in RTP, NC or Washington, DC, with the preferred location of Washington, DC.
Essential Duties:
- Proactively support the cross-institute Food Security and Agriculture team in thinking and acting strategically with respect to communications planning, ensuring that communications goals and activities have clearly defined audiences and measurable outcomes.
- Write and coordinate stakeholder review of a full-range of communications materials, including marketing materials (flyers, brochures, and fact sheets), presentations, speeches, and reports.
- Develop content for external websites, social media, and marketing materials to include evaluating existing content, making recommendations for enhancements, and implementing approved recommendations.
- Create innovative visual representations of RTI’s impact in the sector, including infographics and videos.
- Support global communications events, including conferences, workshops, webinars, panel presentations, Twitter and Google hangouts, brown-bags/press conferences, briefings, etc.
- Develop and maintain key messages around the strategic initiative.
- Collaborate closely with RTI’s corporate communications office, as well as IDG’s Senior Communications Specialist, ensuring that the team’s communications efforts are aligned with RTI-wide goals, initiatives, messaging, and brand
- Maintain printed brochures and other materials for routine use, special events, and regular distribution to our offices world-wide
- Manage multiple activities or projects with competing deadlines
- Support business development and other team functions as assigned, in particular market analysis and proposal support.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required in communications, journalism, international development, international relations, political science, business administration, or related social sciences and 10 years of related work experience in marketing and communications relevant to international development OR Master’s degree (preferred) and 6 years of related work experience in marketing and communications relevant to international development. Solid understanding of the food security and agriculture sector strongly preferred.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills
- Proficiency in creative design applications, including, but not limited to InDesign and Piktochart
- Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively and establish strong working relationships with key colleagues within IDG and other departments across RTI
- Experience managing social media profiles and activities on behalf of a business or nonprofit organization
- Significant experience planning, managing, and coordinating events; experience in international event planning and management preferred
- Proven project management skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Self-starter, able to think creatively and work independently
- Ability to adapt to changes in priorities, workload, and workflow
- Effective organizational and time management skills
- Working knowledge of foreign language(s) (e.g. Arabic, Spanish, or French) is an advantag
