The 27th District Court Service Unit is seeking a qualified candidate for a Probation Officer position. This position protects the public by ensuring that supervision and services for juveniles address identified risk factors and competency needs in order to reduce recidivism. Duties of this position include: performing intake functions, assessing the risks and needs of juveniles from reports, assessment instruments, and ongoing interactions; using web based software for case management and documentation; preparing court reports; engaging youth and families in developing and successfully completing supervision plans; referring to and collaborating with partners; and monitoring progress to maximize opportunities for delinquent youth to become responsible and productive citizens. Position requires periodic on-call duties for after-hours requests for juvenile detention orders from law enforcement personnel. This position will divide their time between 2 offices (Pulaski and Wytheville).
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of criminal/juvenile justice system and court proceedings; experience in criminology, psychology, sociology, or social work. Experience interviewing and counseling, and case management. Ability to write reports; to interpret regulations, guidelines and statues; to identify and use community resources and agency services; and to communicate effectively with a diverse population. Experience with electronic case documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice or a related field; experience counseling maladaptive juveniles.
Special Requirements
A pre-employment drug screen and background investigation will be required of the finalist(s) for the position. A valid Virginia driver’s license may be required by the date of employment.
