These positions are temporary and are expected to last for approximately 6 months. These positions have no promotion potential, if you want to be considered for a higher grade you must apply for the higher grade.

DUTIES:
Recreation Aids and Technicians perform a wide range of duties in support of the Bureau’s recreation program: assisting in inventories, evaluating visitor patterns, preparing and maintaining recreation sites, briefing visitors and answering their questions, or conducting visitor patrols on land and water, responding to emergency situations, and administering first aid/CPR. Litter removal from campgrounds and recreation facilities, hoses down toilets and routine maintenance on signs, etc. This position requires weekend field work. The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day. Work may occur in temperature extremes up to an occasionally exceeding 100F. Some locations require the use of a motor vehicle; in most cases, this will be a 4-wheel drive or all terrain vehicle (ATV).

Applicants applying for Ashland, OR: Duty location is Hyatt Lake (24 miles E).

Applicants applying for San Juan County, OR: Duty location is the San Juan Islands within the county.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
You must meet the following to be found qualified:
GS-2 Recreation Aid
– 3 months of general work experience;
OR
High school graduation or equivalent.
GS-3 Recreation Aid
– 6 months of general work experience;
OR
Successful completion of one year (45 quarter or 30 semester hours) of study above high school;
OR
A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
GS-4 Recreation Assistant
– 6 months of general and 6 months of specialized work experience. Examples of specialized experience may include assisting in gathering, recording, and compiling a few types of recreation/ statistical data and information; and conducting recurring patrols of designated low-use recreational areas;
OR
Successful completion of two years (90 quarter or 60 semester hours) of study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours of courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education arts and crafts, etc.);
OR
A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
GS-5 Recreation Assistant
– one year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS- 4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include assisting in review of potential recreation sites and determining extent of development of recreation area; performing educational and information public contacts with recreation users; and answering questions which relate largely to general situations (e.g., location of campgrounds, geographic direction use restrictions, camp regulations and established boundaries);
OR
Successful completion of a four year (180 quarter or 120 semester hours) course of study leading, to a bachelor’s degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education;
OR
A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
GS-6 Recreation Assistant
– one year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS- 5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include conducting and/or assisting in recreation resource inventories of sites and areas having recreational value; assisting in the signing of public lands such as off-road-vehicle or wilderness signing; recording visitor related incidents; and planning and initiating recreation maintenance and management projects;
OR
One-half year (13.5 quarter or 9 semester hours) of graduate education directly related to the work of the position;
OR
A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
GS-7 Recreation Assistant
– one year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include compiling data from inventories to be used in program planning; preparing or inputting detailed maps and/or overlays on inventory results; meeting with recreational site visitors to point out areas of interest, to advise of the areas recreational availabilities and restrictions, and/or to illicit public concerns and user needs;
OR
One year (27 quarter or 18 semester hours) of graduate education directly related to the work of the position;
OR
A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.

If tentatively selected for this position you will be required to complete and submit a OF-306 Declaration for Federal Employment prior to being appointed to determine your suitability for Federal employment and to authorize a background investigation.


The person tentatively selected for this position is subject to completion of a favorable background investigation. Failure to satisfy the preliminary background check will result in cancellation of the tentative job offer. Failure to satisfy the full investigation requirements may be grounds for termination, once you are placed in the position.


A valid driver’s license is required for some positions.


If you are selected for one of these positions you must be 18 years old and have a current driver’s license.


MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT: Employees required to operate a motor vehicle must be 18, otherwise, you must be 16 at the time you report for work.


A pre-employment physical may be required.


Overnight travel may be required on a regular and recurring basis and employee will be required to obtain and use a government charge card, when travel is necessary.


If you are selected for this position, prior to appointment, you may be subject to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use.


Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.
