POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Communications and Public Affairs leads broad and integrated strategic communications, marketing, and branding operations – both internally and externally. The Director develops and implements strategic plans in order to increase and maintain stakeholder support for our organization, mission, and impact priorities. The Director protects and enhances the reputation of Winrock by effectively using its brand and voice in global media, policy and public affairs platforms. This is a challenging and exciting role that requires a dynamic individual with highly developed skills, creativity and experience and, ideally, strong knowledge of international development, change and crisis management, social impact communications and multi-sector partnerships. The Director will represent Winrock in diverse settings, influence others to support Winrock’s work and messages, and strengthen key internal and external relationships.
The Director supervises the Communications Team, and works closely with the VP for External Affairs, the CEO and other Senior Executives to enhance Winrock’s thought leadership, partnerships and funding activities. The ideal candidate will be based in our Arlington, Virginia office with the ability to travel 20%-30% of the time domestically and internationally.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITES:
- Design and implement strategic communications, brand and marketing plans to enhance Winrock’s reach, credibility and impact for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Assess and enhance message architecture for Winrock to inform website design and general communications strategy.
- Collaborate with program teams to ensure that impact stories and supporting data are prioritized across all media platforms.
- Support CEO and executives with preparation for public appearances.
- Develop and source web content, blogs and opinions, and other content.
- Lead a cross-functional Internal Communications Team and plan to strengthen organizational knowledge, collaboration, productivity and culture.
- Cultivate and support employee brand ambassadors.
- Serve as contact and relationship-builder for local, regional, national and international media and trade press.
- Identify and cultivate Winrock’s top experts for media appearances, thought leadership and other public opportunities.
- Assess and manage production of Winrock’s marketing collateral, copy and other media (including photos, video, websites, annual report, etc).
- Support trainings and promote best practices for field communications staff
- Integrate project communications with Winrock’s global brand narrative.
- Ensure the coordination of Winrock’s presence at public events; identify opportunities for Winrock’s participation in meetings, conferences and other activities to increase awareness of our work.
- Manage the budget and activities of communications staff and consultants, allocating time and resources to achieve the objectives of the unit.
QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND:
Education: Masters level degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Liberal Arts or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Experience: 7 -10 years’ experience in public affairs, communications and/or marketing as well as general budget and personnel management in the field of global development, foreign service, social impact, issue campaigns and/or sustainable business.
Skills/Knowledge: Excellent written and oral communication, and analytical skills. Strategic, business acumen, and supervisory and management skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office, Salesforce and other institutional supported software. Team Player. Great attitude.
