The “Best Small Library in America” seeks the “Best Children’s Librarian” in the charming Southeast Kansas town of Independence. Help us continue the quality recognized through this 2012 Library Journal award by joining us to lead a team of outstanding professionals and supporters who are committed and passionate toward a superb facility.
MLIS is preferred.
Duties
- Selects and deselects materials for the children’s collection
- Creates displays, book lists, and promotional materials for the department
- Performs circulation desk activities using an automated circulation system
- Assures accurate library shelving of books and periodicals by shelf reading and re-shelving, as necessary
- Compiles a variety of statistics concerning library usage and program attendance
- Does children’s library program planning, preparation, and implementation
- Prepares public presentations as needed
- Writes press releases for the department
- Conducts the Summer Reading Program
- Helps patrons with computers
- Offers reader’s advisory services
- Performs related duties as required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of library procedures and practices and children’s literature
- Good grasp of the English language
- Skilled in keyboard typing, computerized data entry and other clerical tasks
- Effectively works for and with supervisors and associates
- Possesses excellent customer service skills
A background check will be performed.
The Children’s Librarian reports to the Library Director.
Compensation: Up to $35,000, commensurate with previous experience. A portion of the following is paid by the library: Health care, dental coverage, and retirement contributions.
