Safety Inspector – Manufacturing - State of Michigan - Detroit, MI

  • Do you care about protecting workers from safety hazards?

  • Would you be open to a career change?

  • Do you have experience with machines in a manufacturing, industrial, or factory setting — for example, as a machine operator, production operator, job setter, die setter, machine repair technician, machine maintenance technician, press operator, cell technician, tool and die maker?

  • Do you have at least one year of responsibility for workplace safety in a general industry environment. This can include responsibility for your own safety.

  • Do you have good writing skills?

  • Are you proficient with computers?

  • Do you think you can learn a lot of technical information in a short period of time?

If the answer to all the questions above is yes, you may want to consider applying to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA). MIOSHA’s mission is to save lives and prevent workers from becoming injured on the job. MIOSHA currently has openings for two compliance officers to inspect factories and other workplaces for compliance with occupational safety regulations. The official title of the job is Workplace Safety Representative; Safety Officer is the more common name.

The positions are in Wayne County. Compliance officers work from their home. The workweek consists of two to three days in workplaces conducting inspections, and the remainder of the workweek at home entering inspection findings into a computerized database and completing other paperwork on a laptop computer. The first three-to-five months is a training and orientation period in which you will be taught the safety regulations. Half of the training is in the classroom, and the other half is in the field. During this period, you will be required to spend weeknights (Monday night to Thursday night) in Lansing or elsewhere in Michigan away from home; you are reimbursed for travel expenses. There will be weekly tests that you will need to pass.

These are full-time, permanent positions with Michigan civil service. The salary range is $19.31 per hour to $31.79 per hour. New employees typically start at the bottom of the pay scale and are automatically advanced to a higher pay grade each year until they reach the maximum. Employees can start higher if ensuring compliance with safety regulations was the major portion of their job and was included in their job title. The position has a competitive benefits package.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree in any major, but work experience can be used as a substitute. If you care about protecting workers from safety hazards, and have a strong interest in industrial processes, this may be the most exciting and rewarding job you will ever hold.
