General Description
The mission of the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is to accelerate global access to life – saving vaccines through the development and implementation of evidence – based policies. The work of IVAC focuses on disease epidemiology, vaccine economics and supply, monitoring and evaluation of vaccine introduction and Center programs, and advocacy and communications activities to increase the profile of and global action on vaccine – preventable disease.
The role of the Sr. Research Assistant is to support the development and maintenance of IVAC’s new data visualization platform, known as VIEW-Hub (Vaccine Information and Epidemiology Window). This includes, but is not limited to tracking data on the progress of global vaccine introductions, use, and impact; generating regular reports on vaccine use and impact evaluation; coordination with key stakeholders; geographic information systems (GIS) mapping.
VIEW-Hub and its corresponding databases support a number of different projects across IVAC, including projects within the Epidemiology and Policy, Advocacy & Communications teams. On the publicly available interactive platform, VIEW-Hub will enable visualization of data that support key immunization decision making, such as information related to vaccine introductions, disease burden, immunization system performance, and vaccine impact studies. Internally, it is also used to generate project – specific and ad hoc analyses for key partners, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gavi, and WHO.
Responsibilities of the positions may include one or more of the following:
Gather, abstract, organize, and analyze data on immunization, health policy, and vaccine Financing.
Assist with the preparation of IVAC’s quarterly Global Vaccine Introduction reports, as well as other presentations, data graphics, and project – specific communications needs.
Assist with the development of advocacy and training materials to promote the new data visualization platform.
Conduct literature reviews of vaccine impact studies; develop new databases; and guide the development of the corresponding module(s) on the online platform.
Engage with study investigators for updates on ongoing vaccine impact studies.
Provide research support as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree required,
Three years of related experience. Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula
Knowledge and interest in vaccines, pneumonia, diarrhea and other major global infectious diseases.
Willingness to travel.
Moderate/advanced proficiency in MS Excel (or Access) and PowerPoint skills required.
Experience in Adobe InDesign preferred.
Understanding of basic epidemiology and statistical concepts.
Strong organizational/project management skills.
Technical writing skills.
Keen attention to detail
Previous experience with data visualizations (tables, charts, figures, maps, infographics , etc.)
Previous research and/or public health work experience.
Demonstrated ability to write in a clear and concise fashion.
Self – motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. .
Ability to manage work on multiple projects, and perhaps under tight deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree preferred.
Database management experience and ArcGIS mapping capability highly preferred
