United States of America: Development Officer, Strategic Development and Fundraising Department


FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt


PAY BAND: 3 (Salary Range $42,000-50,000)


SUMMARY:


American Councils for International Education’s Strategic Development and Fundraising Department is responsible for establishing and expanding organization’s sources of private charitable support. The Department seeks to raise funds from individuals, corporations and foundations through grants, semi-annual campaigns, direct solicitations, and events.


The Development Officer is primarily responsible for developing new leads and supporting existing fundraising initiatives of the department. He/she regularly develops contacts with individual donors, and supports research and contact with foundations and corporations domestically and internationally. The position is best suited for a self-starter who is outgoing, energetic, and creative. We are seeing a dedicated professional who enjoys a fast-paced environment, does not shy away from social interaction, appreciates the value of networking, and seeks to advance further in the international development field. This position reports to the Director of Strategic Development.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:


Individual Donors and Related Events (60%)


· Conduct solicitations alone and with Director of Strategic Development (DSD) and volunteers, presenting proposals to individual prospects, including new, existing and recently lapsed donors.


· Propose cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship practices strategies and provide DSD with necessary preparations and support.


· Assist with metrics and recommendations for tracking the success of fundraising strategies


· Maintain a prospect portfolio of individual prospects, achieving an agreed upon balance of where prospects fall within the fundraising cycle.


· Achieve annual personal goal of performance metrics based on a moves-management system of prospect actions completed.


· Record actions in fundraising database on a timely and accurate basis, including the filing of contact reports for all face-to-face visits.


· Work closely with colleagues across all departments to identify and develop cultivation and solicitation strategies, in close coordination with DSD.


· Assist with and coordinate fundraising events, experiences and other gatherings with donors and prospects in order to build and strengthen relationships, evaluate the individual’s philanthropic priorities and be able to advocate for Case Statement including strategic funding priorities and identified financial needs.


· Develop written materials in support of cultivation and solicitation activities, including proposals, letters, and presentations for donors, briefing materials and contract reports.


· Maintain knowledge of general fundraising trends and best practices to inform ongoing fundraising efforts.


Foundation and Corporate Donors (30%)


· Assist in the identification, research, and solicitation of new corporate sponsors for events.


· Strategically research foundation grants and opportunities for sponsorship and underwriting for American Councils programs and activities. Maintain grant report calendar.


· Assist with drafting and editing of grant reports and grant proposals.


· Conduct both long and short-term research projects.


Administrative (10%)


· Assist with preparation of gift acknowledgements and yearly mailing


· Maintain a database of existing and potential donors


· Address donor questions and requests


· Assist with other tasks as needed, as assigned.


Qualifications:


· Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred.


· 2-3+ years of fundraising or international development programming experience required.


· Solid familiarity with Fundraising concepts, gift solicitation and development is a must.


· Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Database management experience, including GiftWorks, Constant Contact, Publisher, and InDesign highly desirable.


· Experience planning international travel for individuals, producing fundraising and donor appreciation events.


· Experience with social media preferred.


· Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.


· Ability to do follow up on leads and make cold calls to potential donors and other stakeholders.


· Outstanding attention to detail.


· Ability to present information concisely and effectively, both verbally and in writing.


· Ability to organize and prioritize work and work under pressure.


· Ability to work independently is essential.


· Willingness to travel occasionally, both domestically and internationally.


· Effectiveness in a cross-cultural work environment.


· Understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of American Councils for International Education.


· Creative skills a plus.
