Position Summary:
HIAS seeks a Director, Affiliate and Jewish Community Relations to ensure the successful integration of refugees resettled by HIAS through the strengthening of relationships between HIAS, HIAS Affiliates, and the local Jewish communities in which HIAS Affiliates work, helping Affiliates to effectively engage the local Jewish communal institutions in support of refugees. S/he assists the local Jewish community in effectively welcoming refugees. and collaborates with Affiliates to develop and strengthen positive partnerships with Jewish communal institutions leading to increased volunteers, resources, advocates, and financial support.
Essential Functions:
• Supports HIAS Affiliates to develop relationships with key local Jewish leaders and organizations.
• Garners and optimizes support for refugees, including the creation of partnerships that lead to increased volunteers, resources, advocates, and financial support.
• Builds relationships with local Jewish leaders and organizations and helps them to better understand and connect to the local Affiliate’s refugee resettlement program, the global context, and the national Jewish movement to support refugees.
• Ensures that opportunities for local Jewish communities to support refugees beyond working with the local HIAS Affiliate are made available, when appropriate.
• Serves as a resource to help address and combat any fears about or resistance to refugee resettlement from the local Jewish community and help to address communal challenges to Affiliates’ work with refugees.
• Cultivates relationships with HIAS Affiliates and help them to access resources designed to facilitate their engagement of the local Jewish community.
• Works closely with the HIAS Community Engagement staff to ensure that work with local Jewish communities and Affiliates draws from and supports national efforts and that resources and strategies developed for national use address the needs of local Affiliates.
• Works closely with HIAS Program staff to deeply understand the needs and challenges of Affiliates as well as the opportunities they provide for mobilizing support from the local Jewish communities.
• Works with the HIAS Communications staff to support the Affiliates and local Jewish communities to generate earned media attention, particularly in the local Jewish press, to amplify support for refugees.
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Undergraduate degree required; advanced degree in related field preferred.
• A minimum of ten years of professional experience in a related field; extensive knowledge of Jewish communal landscape and minimum of four years working in the Jewish community.
• Proven experience in seeding strategic partnerships and navigating complex organizational landscapes while working to achieve organizational goals.
• Background in social justice, refugee issues or human rights; knowledge of the American Jewish community required.
• Must be able to travel domestically up to 70%, including travel to New York HIAS office monthly.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work in close partnerships; excellent judgment, problem-solving skills, and ability to navigate tricky dynamics.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills that blend diplomacy with directness.
• Self-started, capable of working effectively with remote supervision.
• Quick, creative, entrepreneurial, and flexible, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and opportunities.
