United States of America: Placement Officer, STEM/Public Health


Purpose of Position: Research and advise on academic and training programs that best match sponsored international student study goals and sponsoring program priorities. Apply for and secure admission and financial aid on grantees’ behalf and place in appropriate study programs. Work is carried out independently under general supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:


  • Serve as a key resource on assigned fields of study and as IIE’s primary contact with academic departments, admissions, and financial aid offices.

  • Prepare a range of print and online resources for students and sponsors specific to assigned fields of study including admission information and field of study guidelines.

  • As part of the student selection process, conduct technical review of all submitted applications to ensure they meet program requirements.

  • As part of the placement process, conduct research for students’ targeted fields of study identifying suitable academic programs matching student study goals and sponsor priorities, advise students on strongest options, create academic submission plans, manage application documents and submissions ensuring that student documents meet school and university requirements.

  • Serve as student and sponsor advocate; handle all correspondence between schools and students responding to general and specific questions, inquiries and correspondence and troubleshoot issues.

  • Seek admission and funding; announce admission decisions and suggest final placements that will further interests of students and sponsor goals.

  • Finalize financial aid offers and prepare budget estimates

  • Maintain field, admission and financial data and monitor accuracy. Generate admission reports for various audiences, including schools and sponsors. Identify non-university sources of cost-sharing to supplement university cost-sharing.

  • Travel may be required (less than 10%).

  • Responsible for complying with applicable contract and sponsor requirements and following all IIE policies and procedures

  • Performs other duties and functions as assigned.

Job Requirements


Education/Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year College or university and at least two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience working on projects and tasks involving complex details which require well-developed organizational, time-management and administrative skills.

  • Experience or advanced education within STEM or Public Health fields of study, a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Knowledge of U.S. higher education system and admissions process, a plus.

  • Knowledge of international higher education systems a plus.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, and negotiation skills.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as contracts, policy and procedure manuals and write complex reports and correspondence.

  • Willingness and ability to take initiative.

  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff and external contacts; sensitive to cultural differences when working with people from other cultures; and ability to exercise discretion on confidential matters.

  • Knowledge of extranet, web, and social media networks.

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office 2010; internet software and database software.
